DVD Review: Cutting Edge 3: Chasing The Dream

Championship figure skater Zack Conroy (Matt Lanter) is a brilliant but dangerous competitor, ignoring all risks in pursuit of perfection. But, when his partner and former lover is injured in a devastating fall, Zack finds himself on thin ice and in need of someone new. Enter the beautiful Alex Del Gado (Francia Raisa), a tough-talking hockey player whose raw, unrefined talent is surpassed only by her passion and desire. Tempers flare and sparks fly – both on and off the ice – as the unlikely duo chases an impossible dream on the road to the world championships – where the only thing more dangerous than skating is falling in love.

Review:
Cutting Edge 3: Chasing the Dream is the 3rd installment to the 1992 classic staring D.B. Sweeney and Moria Kelly. As a figure skater myself, the original movie holds a very near and dear place in my heart. I grew up quoting the “toe pick” line whenever I took my friends skating, so naturally I was intrigued by the sequels. Whereas the original was targeted to all movie lovers, the sequels are targeted solely at teenage girls. Take my word, guys won’t enjoy this at all.

As most girls know, sometimes all we want to do is get in our pajamas, order some pizza, and curl up with a corny/sappy teenage movie for the night. This is the perfect movie for a night like that with the girls. While it doesn’t hold a candle to the original, it’s still fun and entertaining to watch.

Roles are reversed in the 3rd installment. It’s the girl, Alexandra Delgado (played by Francia Raisa) who is the hockey player and Zack Conroy (played by Matt Lanter) who is the figure skater. Together the two skaters team up for a shot at Olympic gold, and though they are polar opposites, they find themselves attracted to each other off ice as well. If that relationship isn’t enough soap-opera goodness for you, there’s also another awkward relationship between Zack’s old coach and old pair partner, which leaves Zack feeling a bit confused and unsure of his feelings for Alexandra. Romantic interests and the role reversals aside, this movie follows roughly the same format as the original film, which is perhaps why I didn’t enjoy it as much. Simply put, nothing can touch the original film, especially not to those who grew up with the original film being a favorite.

Matt and Francia have a wonderful chemistry together, and Christy Carlson Romano brings a refining touch to the film as well. I suspect we’ll see more great things from all three of these actors.

Definitely check it out at your next girl’s night, but keep in mind, in remembrance of the famous words uttered by Kate Moseley, this movie won’t kick a little ass.
