‘Umbrella Academy’ Season 3 Rumored Release Date, Cast, and More!

If you’ve been waiting impatiently for your favorite show about a pack of dysfunctional superhero siblings to return, you aren’t alone. We are too! Here’s everything we currently know about Umbrella Academy Season 3.

Umbrella Academy Season 3 Filming and Production

Thankfully, Umbrella Academy hasn’t faced any shutdowns or delays in filming for the new season. And it may be one of the few shows in 2021 that can say that.

Showrunner Steve Blackman announced on Instagram that filming for Umbrella Academy Season 3 wrapped on August 28, 2021. The actors behind the dysfunctional family recorded a video voicing their excitement for the Season they just finished filming.

While we don’t have many details on the plot yet, Season 2’s finale made it clear that we were going to learn more about Sparrow Academy. Producers have also confirmed that the season is set in Hotel Oblivion, a hotel-style prison Reginald Hargreeves created to house the Academy’s worst enemies.

If you’re wondering why we have to wait until 2022 for a show that wrapped in August, visual effects supervisor Everett Burrell may have some insight. He said that the apocalyptic vision in Season 2 took “months and months” just to plan.

With the improved technology and increased expectations for mind blowing special effects on the big screen, television series have to try to keep up with blockbuster films. This means that shows that rely heavily on special effects, like Umbrella Academy, need more time to be produced to the standards audiences expect.

Umbrella Academy Season 3 Cast

Shockingly, all the living Hargreeves kids survived Season 2.

And on top of that, a dead one returned? More on that later. 

Unsurprisingly, Aidan Gallagher will return as Five, Robert Sheehan as Klaus, Emmy Raver-Lampman as Allison, David Castañeda as Diego, Tom Hopper as Luther, and Colm Feore as Reginald.

The biggest question on fans’ minds: after Elliot’s transition, would he still return as Vanya?

If you weren’t aware, Elliot Page, the actor who plays Vanya, came out as a trans man in December 2020. While many showed full support for his announcement, some fans feared that this would be the end of Vanya, as Vanya is a woman.

Netflix responded to his coming out tweet with “So proud of our superhero! WE LOVE YOU ELLIOT! Can’t wait to see you return in Season 3!” 

We can’t wait to see him return either! Vanya has shown a lot of growth over the last two seasons, and it’s exciting to imagine how Elliot will explore the character further.

Someone who hopefully will not return is Kate Walsh as The Handler. While she met a gruesome end in the Season 2 finale, she has a pernicious way of returning despite the odds. Hopefully she stays down this time.

Someone who we’re disappointed we probably won’t see is Marin Ireland as Sissy, Vanya’s love. Sissy and Raymond (Yusuf Gatewood) will have to stay in the 1960s, but since Harlan (Justin Paul Kelly) still maintains his powers, it isn’t impossible for him to return to the present day and make his way back into Season 3.

New Faces for Umbrella Academy Season 3

Haven’t you heard? There’s no Umbrella Academy. It’s the Sparrow Academy.

Also, Umbrella Academy is the only show where you can have 6 of 7 kids start the season alive and somehow end the season with 7 out of 7 back in the land of the living.

To fill out the ranks of this new academy, we have cast members:

• Justin Cornell as Marcus
• Justin H Min as Ben
• Britne Oldford as Fei
• Jake Epstein as Alphonso
• Genesis Rodriguez as Sloane
• Cazzie David as Jayme

And who could forget the Existential Dread Inducing Psykromium Cube. If that’s too much of a mouthful, the telekinetic cube also goes by Christopher.

Umbrella Academy creator Steve Blackman explains that “Christopher is a telekinetic cube of unknown origin. He can turn the room freezing cold and induce paralysing fear. He acts as the Sparrows’ consulted oracle who hands out incredible advice and serves as the family mediator. Trustworthy, loyal, and is treated by the Sparrows like any other sibling, Christopher is a force to be reckoned with.”

We’ll just have to wait and see what Christopher, and the rest of its siblings, are capable of in Season 3.

Umbrella Academy Season 3 Plot

Unfortunately, we cannot consult the comics for hints on what is to come in Season 3. Any mention of the Sparrow Academy in the source material is still shrouded in mystery. 

However, we may not be in the dark for too much longer. Volume 4 of the comic books is called Sparrow Academy. Clearly, it will give at least some of the answers we’ve been hoping for.

While there aren’t too many details released yet, we do know all the episode titles:

• Auf Wiedersehen
• Wedding at the End of the World

• Oblivion

Yikes. Looks like the Season finale will once again be not such a pleasant affair.

Steve Blackman gives a bit of a teaser of what base question Season 3 will cover: “‘What about the other babies born on that day, in that moment?’ The Umbrella Academy siblings are not alone in the world anymore.”

Ominous, and extremely intriguing.

Netflix’s 2021 TUDUM Fan Event 

With the absence of in-person events, such as San Diego Comic-Con, in 2021, Netflix put together their own digital event for fans. The event, branded as TUDUM (the sound Netflix makes when you open the streaming service), was a three hour virtual showcase of the platform’s biggest original titles (and their upcoming seasons), such as Stranger Things, The Witcher, Ozark and more. Included, of course, was Umbrella Academy.

What’s Next & the Season 3 Release Date

While there’s no word yet on the exact premiere date of Umbrella Academy Season 3, it is confirmed that it will hit Netflix at some point during 2022. It’s rumored that it will be later in 2022.

While it’s difficult to wait for the next season of your favorite show to air, Steve Blackman hints that the fans will know a bit more about Season 4 after watching Umbrella Academy Season 3. He says viewers should expect a lot of Easter eggs. 

“We love putting Easter eggs in for our fans,” he says, “And there’s more Easter eggs than ever this year than our previous seasons.” Consider us excited to uncover those clues when Season 3 premieres. We only wish we had the power of time traveling so we could see the show sooner!
