‘Supernatural’ Cast: Where Are They Now?
After a long, 15 season run, it’s hard to imagine the Supernatural cast outside of their iconic roles. What do you mean Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki aren’t brothers and both have their own wives and kids? Misha Collins doesn’t always wear blue ties and trench coats?
Just like it was difficult seeing Daniel Radcliffe without his iconic Harry Potter glasses, it’ll be strange seeing these actors take on new roles. It’s been a year since the final episode of Supernatural aired. Here’s what the cast has been up to in real life since then.
Supernatural Cast
Jensen Ackles
Character: Dean Winchester
What are you supposed to do after you stop playing a hot demon hunter?
The answer is obvious: become Batman.
Ackles starred in the animated Batman: The Long Halloween, both part 1 and part 2. The first film got 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and was a fan favorite adaptation of the DC comic of the same name.
This isn’t Ackles’s first parlay into the Batman universe. He first played Jason Todd in the animated Batman: Under the Red Hood. When he got the call from the studio this time around, he was certainly surprised.
Ackles said, “I come from a previous film where I voiced Red Hood. So when I got the call for this, I assumed I would be reprising that role into whatever story these guys were adapting. But then I realized I’d gotten the upgrade! I don’t think they even got the whole word ‘Batman’ out. They were like, ‘Bat-‘ and I was like, yes!”
Coping with the end of Supernatural by becoming a comic book superhero seems to be a trend for Ackles. He joined The Boys Season 3 as Soldier Boy and when he posted the announcement of him decked out in his costume on Instagram, he said, “My idea of a camouflage banana hammock got overruled.”
He looks great in the new costume, but I definitely would have paid extra to see his personal costume concept come to life.
Ackles is also set to star in Rust. However, production has been halted since October 21, 2021, following the tragic death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and the injury of director Joel Souza. The set and crew are still under investigation after a prop misfire that caused the death and injury, and there’s no news on when and if the filming will continue.
Jared Padalecki
Character: Sam Winchester
Gilmore Girls fans needed a bit of time to adjust when starting their Supernatural journey, as Padalecki played the part of Dean before becoming a Winchester. It was weird to see him in the Supernatural cast calling Ackles “Dean” if you were used to him answering that name in the previous show.
While the show changed all the actors’ lives, Padalecki’s personal life was most impacted, as he met his wife while working on the show. Padalecki met Genevieve Nicole Cortese when she appeared on the show as Ruby, a demon who coerces him into starting the apocalypse. You know, one of the many apocalypses.
Padalecki admits to experiencing deep depression during filming Season 3, but once he met Genevieve in Season 4, his co-stars could tell that she brought joy back into his life.
He is also sharing the screen with his wife once again in a reboot of Walker, Texas Ranger called Walker. Padalecki stars as the infamous Texan and Genevieve plays Emily Walker, his wife.
Misha Collins
Character: Castiel
Known as the lovable fallen angel with little understanding of human customs, Castiel played an integral role in the Supernatural cast by helping the Winchester brothers in their various exploits.
Collins has explored creative avenues other than television since Supernatural ended.
He’s offered his voiceover talents to a thriller podcast called Bridgewater. He has also written an original poetry anthology called Some Things I Still Can’t Tell You.
Mark Sheppard
Character: Crowley
King of Hell with a heart, Sheppard brought to life the demon you loved to hate in the Supernatural cast. Crowley joined the Supernatural universe on Supernatural Season 5.
His character finished his arc in 2017, three years before the show reached its end.
Since then, he’s starred on Doom Patrol as Willoughby Kipling.
Jim Beaver
Character: Bobby Singer
Since the end of Supernatural, Beaver has played a role in a variety of shorts in addition to two TV shows and a movie. He beat Jensen to The Boys, playing the role of Secretary of Defense Robert A. Singer beginning in Season 1.
Interesting name for his character, huh?
He gave his voice to play President Theodore Roosevelt in Teddy. In the show B Positive, he plays Spencer and will appear in the 2021 Nightmare Alley as Sheriff Jedediah Judd alongside Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, and Rooney Mara.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan
Character: John Winchester
Morgan played the recurring role of the emotionally manipulative father to Sam and Dean Winchester. His participation in the show varied from season to season, so he had more opportunities to work on other projects at the same time as Supernatural.
For example, he’s appeared in The Walking Dead since 2016. His resume from 2005 to 2020 is extensive, and he certainly didn’t slow down after Supernatural wrapped.
His credits include:
- The Postcard Killings (Jacob Kanin)
- Walkaway Joe (Cal McCarthy)
- The Unholy (Gerry Fenn)
- Aftershock – A podcast series (Mark Dover)
- The films The Integrity of Joseph Chambers and Fall are both in post-production.
Mark Pellegrino
Played: Lucifer
Pellegrino offered his talents to Supernatural as Lucifer, but he’s since moved beyond his devilish ways.
He appeared in 13 Reasons Why as Bill Standall from 2017 to 2020. He had one episode in 9-1-1 as Mitchell Trent, he appeared in American Rust as Virgil Poe, and his latest credit is Strangers in a Strange Land as “Grungy Man.”
Carry On My Wayward Sons With the Supernatural Cast
The Winchester boys still have a few years before they can truly distance themselves from their roles. When you play one character for 15 years, the public’s perception between your character and yourself becomes blurred.
It will be a while before we see Jared and Jensen not as Sam and Dean Winchester. But we’re excited to see where the Supernatural cast goes from here now that they have the freedom to pursue new roles.

The SPNFamily misses the Winchester brothers every day! Yesterday, November 19, was the one year anniversary of the last episode airing. We love them all and are still attending SPN Comic-Cons to see our beloved SPN Family.
