A Look at the ‘Middle Earth: 31 Disc Ultimate Collector’s Edition’ Blu-Ray

Lord of the Rings Boxed Set

If you are as huge Lord of the Rings and Hobbit fan as I am, then I have some exciting news for you! Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has released what is probably the ultimate Tolkien film collection you will ever need! I mean… One Boxset to Rule them All!!

What WB is has released is a 31-disc 4K release that features all 6 films and a ton of extras. It’s quite a large number of hours (and a lot of fun) to get through it all and any fan of the series will be thrilled.

What’s in the Middle Earth: 31 Disc Ultimate Collector’s Edition Box Set?

As I mentioned, there are 31 discs. LOTR gives each film 6 discs – 1 for the 4K theatrical release, one for the Blu-ray theatrical release, and 2 for extras, extended cuts, ad special features.

The Hobbit series gets a similar release with both a 4K and Blu-ray theatrical releases and additional discs of bonus materials and extended cuts. It’s enough to make your head spin.

The set comes in a beautifully rendered box that contains key characters and scenes from throughout the series. With a magnetic fold open case. You also get elite cases inside for each of the films with a very nice-looking slipcover.

You also get a costume sketch artbook and 7 poster travel cards.  If you’re a serious LOTR/Hobbit nerd this is going to make you totally flip.

Among a ton of special features, there is some new stuff you have probably never seen before, including the following:

  • Cannes Film Festival Presentation Reel
  • Alamo Drafthouse Cast Reunion
  • “The Fellowship of the Ring” – RT: 39:38 (with Billy Boyd, Dominic Monaghan, Sean Astin and Elijah Wood)
  • “The Two Towers” – RT: 32:24 (with Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, Liv Tyler and Viggo Mortenson)
  • “The Return of the King” – RT: 29:48 (with Ian McKellan, Andy Serkis, and Peter Jackson)

How Do the Films Look?

This release is most definitely the best version I have ever seen. The 4K high resolution gets everything just perfect.

While it can be a major pitfall for special effects and CGI for showing the errors that is not the case in this series. The work is all top-notch and you can really see the detail of the special effects and the CGI holds up marvelously.

The color saturation is perfectly balanced. These movies are, in my opinion, works of art and this release is like getting new glasses and seeing it in a new way for the first time. It just looks so lovely.

The Blu-ray releases are superb as well. I already have older Blu-ray releases, and these are not the same discs. They’ve got a nice upgrade and will make any fan happy.

This release will certainly satisfy many Tolkien fans, especially the ones who haven’t bought the movies in 4K yet. With Christmas coming p it’s a must for that Tolkien fan in your life!

Middle Earth: 31 Disc Ultimate Collector’s Edition is currently available from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.
