‘Legally Blonde 3’: What Fans Need to Know (Filming Update)

Legally Blonde 3

Filming for Legally Blonde 3 is officially starting this year! It’s been a long road back to the big screen for Elle Woods, the feminist icon who showed us all that you can follow your dreams, stay true to yourself, and look fabulous in pink while you do it all. After years of rumors that a script was in the works and a third film was coming, we know that filming is set to begin this September!

So, now that she’s conquered the courtroom and Congress, what is next for this legal fashionista, sorority girl, and animal rights activist? Let’s bend and snap as we take a look at everything we know about Legally Blonde 3.

Legally Blonde Movie

The Legally Blonde Legacy

There’s no denying the cultural impact Legally Blonde had on the early 2000s and still today. From the original film to the 2003 sequel Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde, to Legally Blonde: The Musical in 2007, to the 2009 spinoff Legally Blondes, the iconic character by author Amanda Brown has taken cinema and the stage by storm.

With Reese Witherspoon playing Elle Woods, the first Legally Blonde made over $141 million in worldwide box office sales.

We can’t wait to see how Elle will continue to inspire us in Legally Blonde 3 now that her Harvard Law School days are far behind her. A recent update in Production Weekly describes the intention of the new film to revolve around “female empowerment, a message that hits at a fortuitous time in the culture.”

Legally Blonde 3 Production

The producers behind Legally Blonde got the best of the best to write a bombshell script that captures the iconic characters in all their glory 20 years after the original film. Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor, the Brooklyn Nine-Nine co-creator, are teaming up to write the threequel.

This is not the first time that Kaling and Reese Witherspoon, the iconic Elle Woods, have worked together. They both starred in A Wrinkle in Time back in 2018.

Kaling announced her involvement in the project with an Instagram post that featured the caption, “Finally some use for my Elle Woods fan fiction! So excited to be reunited with my friends @reesewitherspoon @laurenneu and Dan Goor to work on this movie. Elle Woods is so iconic, proving you can be girly and smart at the same time. Bend and snap people.”

While Witherspoon is keeping her lips locked on big plot details, Kaling has confirmed that Elle will appear in this movie in her 40s.

While we have new writers on the project, the original producers, Marc Platt and Adam Siegel, will once again take the helm of the project, working with Witherspoon’s production company Hello Sunshine.

Witherspoon, who will also act as a producer, promised that Legally Blonde 3 will be “So much fun. So full of fashion. So full of awesome feminist ideas. It will be global. It will have animals. And it will have returning cast members. We just need to film it first. But that’s my hope and dream for Legally Blonde 3.”

Where Do Things Currently Stand With The Film?

In September 2021, Witherspoon said they didn’t even have the official script on hand. “Mindy’s busy,” Witherspoon explained. “Mindy’s working hard on it. I know she is. And she and I just love each other.”

So when will that filming happen? Is the script finished? Production is set to begin on September 6, 2024, and continue through February 10, 2025.

Legally Blonde 3 Cast

There is no threequel without Elle Woods, so of course, Reese Witherspoon will return as the feminist icon. She announced all the way back in 2018 that Legally Blonde was returning in an Instagram post of her in the iconic pink bikini. It’s true… #LegallyBlonde3,” she said simply.

So who will be joining her on-screen?

Witherspoon confirmed that the movie will feature her and Jennifer Coolidge as Paulette Parcelle. IMDB also reveals that the sorority sisters Serena (Alanna Ubach) and Margot (Jessica Cauffiel) will share the spotlight as well.

As far as the rest of the cast? Not even they know if they’re involved. Luke Wilson, the actor behind Emmett, Elle’s lawyer husband, said he knows no more about the project than the general public, but he would love to return and reprise his role.

Even if they don’t all return for Legally Blonde 3, the original cast met up virtually in October of 2020 to support World Central Kitchen in a fun Zoom call reunion.

Witherspoon talked about the impact that Elle Woods has left on the world. “I don’t think any of us knew what this film was going to turn out to be or how much it was going to inspire young women and young people across the world,” she said. “I travel the entire world, and always the movie that people stop me about is Legally Blonde. And the thing that actually really touches my heart is more people stop me and say, ‘I went to law school because of Elle Woods.’ Which is really amazing.”

The world needs more women in these powerful roles. So it’s more important than ever to bring back such an iconic character.

Legally Blonde 3 Release Date Speculation and News

Even though we know Jennifer Coolidge will play a major role, not even she is aware of all that there is to come. In a December 2021 interview, Coolidge told Entertainment Tonight that “Reese is the keeper of the keys. She knows all the secrets.”

Pre-production was supposed to begin in May 2020, but, not surprisingly, that didn’t happen. At that time, there was a rumored release date of May 20, 2022.

Now, with filming set to begin in September 2024 and continue through February 10, 2025, it’s possible we could see a release in 2025. Or, it’s possible they could still hold the film for a May 2026 premiere. So, we’ll just have to wait for Legally Blonde 3 details as they are revealed. We’ll keep this posted updated as more news is released!
