Clueless DVD Review: A 90’s Cult Classic

Clueless is a classic for those of us that grew up in the 90’s. It is, without question, one of the films that we look back on our grade school years and remember. For some of us, it was our first introduction to Paul Rudd that we remember the most, others of us still can’t say “Whatever” without fondly remembering Cher and her oddly amusing social skills.

Clueless tells the story of Cher (Alicia Silverstone), a Beverly Hills teenage matchmaker who seems to be less talented at finding love for her friends than she thinks. From setting her friend Tai (Brittany Murphy) up with guy that’s completely wrong for her, to having Tai fall for the one guy that Cher ultimately realizes she likes… Yes, the Mr. Knightley in this story is Cher’s step-brother. It’s a little odd, but the charming Paul Rudd makes it less creepy than it sounds.

Wonderfully written and directed by Amy Heckerling (Fast Times at Ridgemont High), Clueless does an incredible job at showcasing the vocab and attitudes of the 90’s teenager. What most people don’t realize about Clueless is that it actually a modernized classic originally told by Jane Austin and titled Emma. This version though is all about popularity, fashion, and the high school dating scene.

Special features on the newly released Blu-ray include: a Clue or False Trivia Game, two original theatrical trailers (it’s amazing how much the art of trailers has progressed since the mid-90’s), and a number of featurettes such as The Class of ’95, Creative Writing, Fashion 101 (my personal favorite of the extras), Language Arts, Driver’s Ed, and more!

If you were in high school in the 90’s,then you already know this is a classic and a must have for your collection. If you missed out on the awesomeness, then it’s not too late! Clueless is available on Blu-ray now!

  1. This is one of those movies you never get tired of watching. I know the girls love it to. The catch fraze whatever that Cher aka Alicia Silverstone, used is still a catch fraze used today. You have to smile when you think about it.

  2. So true 🙂 I also love going back and seeing Paul Rudd. I make a point of seeing everything he’s in now. He’s a great actor…. he was brilliant this season in Parks and Rec!

  3. Great review! This was the first time I remember seeing Paul Rudd, myself. If you grew up in the ’90s, you might enjoy my new novel LOST IN THE ’90s — the story of a teenage wannabe rock star from 2012 who travels back in time to April 1994, on the eve of Kurt Cobain’s suicide.
