‘Vikings: Valhalla’ Season 2: Cast, Filming, And News Updates
The spin-off series of the History Channel’s Vikings was met with wild success in its first season. In the first two days Netflix made it available to stream, fans viewed it for 80.5 million hours. So it’s no wonder they can’t wait for Vikings: Valhalla Season 2. Can the second season climb to the top of the Netflix charts just like the first? Will Season 2 bring us descendents from the original series Vikings?
Here’s everything we know so far about the popular historical drama.
Vikings: Valhalla Season 1
Back in 2013, Michael Hirst created a show called Vikings for the History Channel. Its six seasons were wildly successful, so Netflix picked up the rights to make a spin-off. If the success of Vikings: Valhalla Season 1 is any indication, they made an excellent investment.
Vikings: Valhalla begins 100 years after the Great Viking army started its voyage to England to avenge Ragnar Lothbrok in the original Vikings. This series focuses on Leif Eriksson, Freydís Eiríksdóttir, and Nordic prince Harald Sigurdsson.
The series builds on its predecessor by continuing to tell the tales of real historical figures but with a fictionalized twist. Season 1 begins after the St. Brice’s Day Massacre, where King Æthelred the Unready orchestrated the mass killings of Danes.
It’s only been on Netflix for less than a month and people are already asking for Season 2.
Vikings: Valhalla Season 2
Fans of the show will be pleased to learn that Vikings: Valhalla Season 2 has already been filmed and Season 3 is guaranteed. Netflix announced that the next two seasons were on their way.
We almost knew from the start that Season 3 was likely, because Netflix ordered 24 episodes upfront and the first season was only 8 episodes long. With the rights to make a spin-off, Netflix also acquired licensing rights to the original series. Vikings Seasons 1-6 will appear on the streaming service in a few years.
Season 2 Filming Wrapped
Production for Vikings: Valhalla Season 2 wrapped in Ireland in November 2021.
Vikings: Valhalla showrunner, co-creator, and executive producer Jeb Stuart said, “Fans of Valhalla — THANK YOU to the millions of you who have watched (and rewatched!) season 1. The numbers have been mind-boggling and beyond my wildest expectations. I’m thrilled to be able to confirm that we wrapped and are already editing season 2 and that production will start soon on season 3. While the storylines for Leif, Freydis, Harald, Olaf, Canute and the rest of our amazing cast are secret, I can say without hesitation that their journeys will be even more epic than what you’ve seen so far. SKÅL!!!”
Vikings: Valhalla Cast
So what brave warriors will return for Vikings: Valhalla Season 2?
Sam Corlett of course returns as legendary explorer Leif Eriksson, Frida Gustavsson reprises her role as headstrong sister Freydís Eiríksdóttir, and Leo Suter continues on as Harald Sigurdsson.
We assume that Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson will return as Olaf, Soren Pilmark as King Forkbeard, and Bradley Freegard as King Canute.
Jarl Haakon died in Season 1, but the actress who plays her said we can’t completely count out Jarl making an appearance. Caroline Henderson mysteriously stated that, “We don’t really know that [she won’t be back]. She might turn up as a ghost or something.”
Fans have speculated that we might get a chance to see descendents of the Vikings series appear in Season 2. It’s completely possible; it’s set 100 years later, but it takes place in the same universe. When asked if we’ll see any in Vikings: Valhalla Season 2, showrunner Jeb Stuart said, “As I was plotting out season 2 I did a lot of math trying to track down where we’d be with Ivar’s descendants. Since future seasons will see our Vikings out in the greater world… anything is possible.”
Vikings: Valhalla Release Date (Speculation)
So how long until we find out for sure who will join the storylines for Leif, Freydís, Harald, Olaf, and the rest? Netflix has yet to announce a Vikings: Valhalla Season 2 release date. However, we can speculate that if production wrapped in November 2021, we’ll likely see Season 2 coming to Netflix in the first few months of 2023.
