‘Locke and Key’ Season 3: Release Date, Cast, Trailer, and More!

Updated August 1, 2022

Fans can’t get enough of the fantasy horror drama that explores the mythical realities you can unlock with just a key. The Netflix show’s Locke and Key Season 3 creators promise that this next season will top the first two in every way.

Netflix guaranteed a third season well before Season 2 premiered, so we think the cast and crew have spent that time making something special.

Here’s everything we currently know about Locke and Key Season 3, which officially debuts on Netflix on August 10.

Locke and Key Filming Location

Netflix developed the Locke and Key TV show from the comic books of the same name by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez.

Eleven months before Season 2 premiered on Netflix, the streaming service announced, along with several other projects, that prolific producer and writer Meredith Averill would work on Locke and Key Season 3.

Vice President of overall deals for Netflix Brian Wright said, “[Showrunners] Carlton [Cuse] and Meredith [Averill] have built an incredible world in Locke and Key, and we’re excited to have the Lockes return for more in the third season.” Cuse then promised that We have some incredible adventures in store for the Locke family in Season 3, and could not be more excited to continue telling our story with our great partners at Netflix.

The announcement came out in December 2020 and Season 2 came out in November 2021. Greenlighting a season that early gives the whole team a chance to get the project off the ground early. Hopefully, that early progress will reflect in the release date!

Because of the early announcement, the team started production for Locke and Key Season 3 before Season 2 hit Netflix. Cuse admits that they had “already written a good chunk of Season 3, before we even started filming Season 2.”

Where is Locke and Key Filmed?

So where is Locke and Key filmed? Most of the filming for Season 3 happened in Toronto and began in May 2021. They worked through the summer and wrapped in September 2021. Darby Stanchfield, who plays Nina, posted on September 15th with a caption saying it was the last day of filming.

Post-production on such a visually-rich show takes time. Putting together realistic visual effects for a fantasy show is no small task. Sound-post was scheduled to wrap in February 2022.

Locke and Key Cast

So who will return for the Locke and Key Season 3 cast? Of course, the Locke family will return for the third season.

Connor Jessup returns as the older brother Tyler, Emilia Jones returns as the only sister Kinsey, and Jackson Robert returns as the youngest Bode. Darby Stanchfield will continue to play Nina, and Aaron Ashmore will act as Duncan. Petrice Jones plays Scot, and Brendan Hines plays Josh again.

The character we’re most looking forward to seeing? Kevin Durand as Frederick Gideon.

The Season 2 finale set up his character as the primary antagonist of Locke and Key Season 3. He’s an echo of a revolutionary war soldier. He’s also possessed, and also The Black Door’s most dangerous demon. We think Hines might play a larger role due to his relation to Captain Gideon.

The Netflix teaser promises that “the Locke family uncovers more magic within Keyhouse, while a new threat — the most dangerous one yet — looms in Matheson with plans of his own for the keys.”

We’re excited to see what Gideon has in store for the family!
