Fast and Furious 6 Review: The Longest Runway Ever

Fast & Furious 6 Review

The Fast and Furious series is one of my favorites to watch as I can always expect to see beautiful cars and good action throughout. Fast and Furious 6 is certainly full of action and insane situations. However, some of these situations went to a little too far for my liking.

The movie starts with Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) approaching Dom (Vin Diesel), asking him for help to stop a highly trained racing crew who plans on stealing a top secret weapon. The only way Hobbs envisions getting close to these guys is by bringing in Dom and his crew – the cast of characters we all know and love. What makes Hobbs’ offer even more enticing for Dom is that he’s offering full pardons for him and his entire crew. But there is also the unforeseen factor of Letty being spotted working for this team of mercenaries. Yeah, that definitely got Dom’s attention.

The movie comes with a lot of great action and crazy moments that’s meant to be taken as nothing but pure entertainment, because some of it is just far too over the top. This includes a scene with Dom and Letty and another scene where there is apparently the longest runway ever, a scene that went on for an absurd amount of time. It was easy to look past the first one, but the runway scene with the airplane was just too much for me to appreciate. That’s when I reminded myself that it’s nothing but pure entertainment. I just wish it wasn’t so over the top.

The best part of the movie was the first hour or so when it was establishing itself and both crews met each other on the road for the first time. The first chase between Dom’s crew and the elite mercenary team was probably the best as it was the most natural aspect of chasing down each other in cars. There were no tanks or airplanes, even though Hobbs can apparently fly. Maybe I was just in the wrong mood at the time, but this movie just felt too over the top. I certainly appreciate good action, but it has to be done right and this just didn’t feel that well executed.

Leaving it at the tank scene would have been the ideal place to end all the chaos. Come on, that’s enough for a final engagement. Even with the over the top action, Fast and Furious 6 still offers good humor and entertainment for all fans of the series to appreciate. Yeah, I have a few things I didn’t care for with the movie, but I’ll always appreciate the team when they get together.

Special features include the extended version of the film, the making of, deleted scenes, on the set with Vin, feature commentary, and five documentary features that are exclusive to the Bluray edition. There is definitely a lot here for all fans to appreciate.

Grade: B-

I would like to mention that a portion of the Bluray sales will benefit Paul Walker’s Reach Out Worldwide charity.
