Early Life

Thomas Cruise Mapother IV was born on July 3, 1962, in Syracuse, NY. His mother, Mary Lee, was a special education teacher and his father was an electrical engineer. He has three sisters, Lee Anne, Marian, and Cass.

Cruise did not have an easy childhood. His family was quite poor. And according to Cruise, his father was abusive, a bully, and a coward. They moved to Canada when Tom was nine years old, and there, he went to the Robert Hopkins Public School, where he started cultivating an interest in drama. With a lot of moving around, Cruise attended a total of 15 schools until he graduated high school at Glen Ridge High School in New Jersey.

Career Beginnings

Cruise’s acting career began with a minor role in Endless Love in 1981. He was 19 years old at the time. Two years later, he played what would become one of his most memorable leading roles as Joel Goodson in Risky Business. Cruise was reportedly paid $75,000 for the role.

However, it wasn’t until he starred in the 1986 action drama Top Gun that he finally landed his first of many blockbusters. The latter part of the 80s brought a string of highly successful movies. He was a glitzy pool player in The Color of Money (earning him $1 million), a bartending business student in Cocktail (earning him $3 million), and a war veteran in Born on the Fourth of July (earning him $3 million + a percentage of gross profits).

Hit Movies

The 1990s brought a number of fantastic (and high-paying) films that starred Cruise, like A Few Good Men (for which Cruise earned $12.5 million), The Firm ($12 million), Interview with a Vampire ($15 million), and Jerry Maguire ($20 million).

He also starred opposite ex-wife Nicole Kidman in three blockbuster movies – Days of Thunder in 1990, Far and Away in 1992, and Eyes Wide Shut by the decade’s end.

One of the earliest significant boosts to Tom Cruise’s net worth was Days of Thunder, for which IMDB reports he was paid $9 million. Following that was Far and Away, for which he earned $13 million. While these were considerably high film salaries at the time, they would pale in comparison to what he would make off his work in the Mission Impossible franchise

The Mission Impossible Franchise

Among the younger audience, Tom Cruise is probably the most famous as Ethan Hunt in the Mission Impossible films. According to IMDB, for the 1996 original film in the franchise, Cruise received $70 million (gross participation).

For those unfamiliar with the term, gross participation means all revenues received. Lead actors, directors, and other key figures involved in a film, who have some degree of leverage over the budget, argued that, due to the definitional changes in net profits, it was tough to get adequately compensated. Consequently, these individuals started asking for “gross participation.”

Noting that, by the time the second film came around in 2000, Cruise reportedly made $75 million (gross participation).

And just when we thought the Mission Impossible franchise was done, in 2023, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One was released, giving Tom Cruise’s net worth another boost of $13 million plus a percentage of the backend. He’s expected to receive the same deal for Dead Reckoning Part 2.

Most recently, he stars once again as Lt. Pete Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick, a character he first made famous in 1986. The role considerably boosted Tom Cruise’s net worth, making him a reported $13 million in addition to a percentage of the backend. The original Top Gun movie earned Cruise a $2 million salary.

2022’s Top Gun: Maverick has made over $1.4 billion worldwide against its $170 million budget. As of 2023, it’s Cruise’s highest-grossing movie ever, and his first (and currently only film) to earn over $1 billion.

Acting Awards and Recognitions

Cruise has won Golden Globe Awards as Best Actor for Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire, and Best Supporting Actor for Magnolia. However, he has returned all three awards to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association due to a number of controversial issues.

Cruise has received 3 nominations for Academy Awards. However, he has yet to win an Oscar. So far, he has received a total of 103 nominations from major award-giving bodies and has won 38 awards.

Real Estate

Tom Cruise’s net worth is also impacted by his real estate investments over the years. One of his most recent acquisitions includes a penthouse in Clearwater, FL worth over $9.5 million. Cruise also purchased three more condos in the building worth close to $1.5 million, apparently for his relatives and staff.

He previously owned a ranch in Telluride, CO, which he sold for $39.5 million. He had previously tried to sell the 320-acre property for $59 million before relisting it in 2021 when it eventually sold.

When Cruise was married to Katie Holmes, they lived in a property in Beverly Hills that Cruise had bought for $30.5 million in 2007. Eventually, he sold the property in 2016 for $38 million. That sale came early a year after he sold his Hollywood Hills estate to Eva Longoria for $11.4 million.

Family and Marriages

Tom Cruise has been married three times. His first wife was actress Mimi Rogers. The marriage lasted for three years, from 1987 until 1990. Shortly after the separation, Cruise married his second wife Nicole Kidman, also in 1990. Together, the powerhouse couple adopted daughter Isabella Jane and son Connor Antony. Unfortunately, Cruise and Kidman divorced after 11 years in 2001.

In 2005, Cruise started dating actress Katie Holmes. Their daughter Suri was born in April 2006. A few months later, the couple married in a star-studded ceremony. The Church of Scientology, of which Cruise was an active member, was a massive part of the ceremony. However, the couple eventually separated in 2012 when Holmes filed for divorce.

Since that time, Cruise has been romantically connected to a number of stars, including his Mission Impossible co-star, Hayley Atwell.

Tom Cruise’s Net Worth Today

As of 2023, Tom Cruise’s net worth is estimated at a jaw-dropping $600 million! While his acting career is largely responsible for that number, it’s also impacted by his work as a producer as well as his real estate investments and other business ventures.

Cruise fans can look forward to seeing him next in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two, which Cruise was filming as of late June 2023. The film is currently scheduled for a June 2024 release. However, it’s unclear presently if that will be pushed due to the WGA and SAG strikes.

Additionally, Cruise has several other titles in various stages of development, including a yet-to-be-titled project with Doug Liman, which will be the first-ever Hollywood motion picture to film in space. The project is currently in pre-production and is expected to have a budget of $200 million.
