Mindhunter Season 3: Will It Happen? Here’s What We Know

Mindhunter Season 3

Waiting for Netflix to announce the renewal of your favorite series can feel like it takes a lifetime. Fans of the popular serial killer drama are on the edge of their seats, wondering if Netflix will ever announce Mindhunter Season 3. While the show doesn’t draw the numbers that smash hits like Squid Game garner, Mindhunter offers the streaming service critical acclaim. Averaging 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s clear that those who do watch it love it.

But is that enough to get Netflix to renew?

Let’s talk about Mindhunter Season 3.

Mindhunter: The Show So Far

Mindhunter tells the story of two FBI agents working in the 1970s in the process of opening up a new Bureau, the Behavioral Science Unit, within the Academy. Jonathan Groff (well known as King George III in Broadway’s Hamilton and Kristoff in Disney’s Frozen) played Agent Holden Ford, Holt McCallany played Agent Bill Tench, and Anna Torv played psychologist Wendy Carr.

The Behavioral Science Unit is dedicated to studying the most notorious killers that ever lived in order to catch ones still at large. They interview imprisoned serial killers to get a better grasp of this type of criminal’s psychology. Famous serial killers and criminals played in the series include:

  • Edmund Kemper (the Co-Ed Killer) played by Cameron Britton
  • Montie Rissel, played by Sam Strike
  • Jerry Brudos (the Lust Killer/Salem shoe-fetish killer), played by Happy Anderson
  • Richard Speck, played by Jack Erdie
  • Dennis Rader (known as the BTK Killer), played by Sonny Valicenti
  • David Berkowitz (the Son of Sam), played by Oliver Cooper
  • Charles Manson, played by Damon Harriman

Why We Don’t Have Mindhunter Season 3 Yet

For those who love true crime and serial killer content, Mindhunter was a knock-out series. However, it didn’t draw the crowds Netflix requires to greenlight another season of such an expensive show.

Additionally, David Fincher, an executive producer, showrunner, and director for the show, is tied up in a lot of other Netflix content creation. Netflix told Vulture, “David is focused on directing his first Netflix film Mank and on producing the second season of Love, Death and Robots. He may revisit Mindhunter again in the future, but in the meantime felt it wasn’t fair to the actors to hold them from seeking other work while he was exploring new work of his own.”

While we would have loved to see Mindhunter Season 3 greenlit immediately, Executive Producer David Fincher is aware of the reality of the business. He said, “Listen, for the viewership that it had, it was a very expensive show. We talked about, ‘Finish Mank and then see how you feel,’ but I honestly don’t think we’re going to be able to do it for less than I did season two. And on some level, you have to be realistic — dollars have to equal eyeballs.” He also admitted that the first two seasons left him exhausted. With the number of projects he has on his plate, he can’t afford to let one project drain him.

However, the actors are ready to make another season. Actor Jonathan Groff said of Fincher, “The minute he says he wants to do another one, I’ll be there in a second. But I trust his vision and his instincts, and so I leave it always in his hands, as ever.”

Mindhunter Season 3: Abandoned Plans

Hopefully, we’ll get to see Mindhunter Season 3 come to fruition. But if we don’t, what was the game plan for the next installment of the series?

Season 2 Director Andrew Dominik gave us a taste of what would be the subject of Mindhunter Season 3. “What they were going to do with Season 3 was they were going to go [to] Hollywood. So one of them was going to be hooking up with Jonathan Demme and the other one was going to be hooking up with Michael Mann. And it was all going to be about profiling making it into the sort of zeitgeist, the public consciousness. It would’ve been… That was the season everyone was really waiting for to do, with when they sort of get out of the basement and start.”

So while this Netflix series is not officially canceled, we’re stuck in an indefinite hold. While David Finch doesn’t seem too optimistic about Mindhunter Season 3, stranger things have happened with Netflix shows. Whether we have to wait a year or 10, we’ll keep an eye out for any announcements, from greenlights to release dates.

  1. One of THE best shows that I have seen in a long time. Just binge-watched 2. Bring it back! Bring it back!!! It’s addictive!

    1. I do not know why it is so difficult to understand that we need to see how this magnificent series ends, bringing back please 🙏

  2. Sadly most people stop watching it because they don’t follow the dialogue, they don’t give it time to build up. What a shame.

  3. I for one loved the Mindhunter series. It was realistic and fascinating, true, crazy serial killers, and how their minds work.

  4. One of few series I actually remember what I watched, every scene and every actor. Excelent one. Kind a morbid, yes, but excellent quality. Excellent crew, excellent screenplay, directing and production. It would be shame to leave it up to season 2. I have seen so far some series reaching season 10 etc. totally undeserved. Perhaps this one in the short period can not earn a lot of money, but timewise, I belive it has a great potential to become true classic.

  5. We were just getting to the part where “ FBI profiling” was being accepted. That was a huge part of the show! We need to see it once it is accepted and the real work starts.

  6. I literally stopped watching a lot of network television simply because of so many great series get canceled with no conclusion. I adopted Netflix as a place that brought back shows we loved even if they were a little short on huge fan base numbers. But sadly Netflix is turning into the same crap as network tv chasing fickle audiences instead of just releasing good content for all.
