What Fans Need to Know About ‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’

The 2022 animated comedy serves as a sequel to 2015’s spin-off prequel, Minions. It’s the fifth overall film in the Despicable Me franchise, which kicked off with its title film in 2010. The next film planned in the series will be 2024’s Despicable Me.

The film tells the story of a 12-year old Gru (Oscar® nominee Steve Carell), long before he becomes the master of evil. Gru is living in 1970s suburbia and wants nothing more than to take over the world from his basement.

It’s not quite going to plan when Gru crosses path with the Minions, including loveable Kevin, Stuart, Bob, and Otto. Together, they build their first lair, design their first weapons, and strive to execute their first missions.

Enter the Vicious 6, the infamous supervillain supergroup. They’ve kicked out their leader, legendary martial arts fighter Wild Knuckles (Oscar® winner Alan Arkin), and Gru, their biggest fanboy, sees an opportunity. He interviews with the group to become their newest member. However, the Vicious 6 is not impressed.

One thing leads to another. And Gru not only outsmarts the group. He also enrages them, finding himself the mortal enemy of the apex of evil. Gru goes on the run, leaving the Minions with the task of mastering the art of kung fu in an effort to save their master. And in the process, Gru discovers that even villains need a little help from their friends.

A Star-Studded Cast

Minions: The Rise of Gru is packed with stars from the voices of Steve Carell to Alan Arkin to the that of the Vicious 6, including:

  • Taraji P. Henson as cool and confident leader Belle Bottom, whose chain belt doubles as a lethal disco-ball mace;
  • Jean-Claude Van Damme as the nihilistic Jean Clawed, who’s armed (literally) with a giant robotic claw;
  • Lucy Lawless as Nunchuck, whose traditional nun’s habit hides her deadly nun-chucks;
  • Dolph Lundgren as Swedish roller-skate champion Svengeance, who dispenses his enemies with spin kicks from his spiked skates;
  • Danny Trejo as Stronghold, whose giant iron hands are both a menace to others and a burden to him.

The film also stars Russell Brand as Young Dr. Nefario, an aspiring mad scientist. Michelle Yeoh as Master Chow, an acupuncturist with mad kung fu skills. And last, but certainly not least, Oscar® winner Julie Andrews as Gru’s maddeningly self-absorbed mom.

When Will Minions: The Rise of Gru Come Out On Streaming?

Universal announced last December that their new films would stream exclusively on Peacock as soon as 45 days after they debut in theaters.

The strategy started with the studios’ 2022 films, bringing films to the streaming platform more quickly than the traditional 8 to 9 month gap between a film’s theatrical debut and its availability on streaming.

“Prioritizing the theatrical experience and eventizing our world class content remains the cornerstone of our business,” added Peter Levinsohn, Chief Distribution Officer and Vice Chairman of Universal Films Entertainment Group.

“By ensuring our upcoming slate has both a theatrical window and timely Peacock debut, we satisfy the needs and expectations for key stakeholders across the spectrum, from our filmmakers and producing partners, to cinemagoers and Peacock subscribers.” Levinsohn continues.

“As we continue investing in the most valued and sought-after content for Peacock, films are essential to that mix,” Kelly Campbell, Peacock president states. “The team at Universal Filmed Entertainment Group are fantastic partners and we are excited to bring their amazing slate of blockbuster films and beloved franchises to Peacock as early as 45 days after their theatrical release, and provide a steady stream of fresh, original films exclusively for Peacock customers throughout the year.”

The 45-day theatrical run would put Minions: The Rise of Gru making its debut on Peacock the week of August 15. The streaming platform offers two paid plans (Peacock Premium at $4.99/month and Peacock Premium Plus at $9.99/month) in addition to their free plan.

Once Minions: The Rise of Gru arrives on Peacock, fans will be able to stream the film on either of the Peacock Premium plans.
