5 New Movies This Week, Including ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ and More!

Curious what’s new this week on the big screen? There are five new movies this week! From Chris Hemsworth returning in Thor: Love and Thunder to the director of Moana‘s newest project, The Sea Beast, there’s something for everyone!

Here’s the full rundown of new movies this week that are coming out in theaters, as well as those releasing on the major streaming platforms.

New Movies Coming Out This Week July 4 – July 10, 2022

Thor: Love and Thunder    (2022)

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Friday, July 8, 2022.

Summary: Thor: Love and Thunder starts with Thor (Chris Hemsworth) trying to deal with the aftermath of the Avengers’ battle with Thanos. Should he retire and give up being a superhero? However, there is a new foe to fight, Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), and Thor asks his friends to help take down Gorr, who intends to make the gods extinct.

What to Watch For: Christian Bale didn’t want to do any more superhero films, but he agreed to the part of Gorr after his kids begged him to take the role.

Word on the Street: Chris Hemsworth is appearing in his eighth film as Thor, and this is the third standalone film in the series. He gained more muscle mass than ever for this film and had to eat eight times a day to keep it.

My Take: I am a massive fan of director Taika Waititi. I love his first two feature films, Boy (2010) and Eagle vs Shark (2007).

The Sea Beast

Release Date: In select theatres and premiering on the Netflix platform on Friday, July 8, 2022.

Summary: The Sea Beast takes place in a time when giant, terrifying beasts inhabited the seas, a great monster hunter, Jacob Holland (Karl Urban), sailed the waters seeking adventure and fortune. When young Maisie (Zaris-Angel Hator) stows away on Jacob’s ship, he is given an unexpected ally to embark on an epic journey to uncharted waters and hunt a legendary sea beast.

What to Watch For: The film is directed by Chris Williams, who won the 2014 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film of the Year for his movie Big Hero 6.

Word on the Street: Williams also brought us the Academy Award nominee Bolt (2008) and the hit Moana (2016).

My Take: I loved Moana, so I can’t wait to see this film.

Both Sides of the Blade

Release Date: In select theatres on Friday, July 8, 2022.

Summary: Both Sides of the Blade is about Sara (Juliette Binoche) and Jean (Vincent Lindon), have a good life together and are in love. Their happiness is shattered when Sara sees and then meets by chance her former lover, Francois (Gregoire Colin), who ten years ago was Jean’s best friend. Despite her love for Jean, Sara can’t resist Francois, starting something that will bring down all their lives.

What to Watch For: The film is from award-winning director Claire Denis, whose past movies include Chocolat (1988), Bastards (2013), and Let the Sunshine In (2017).

Word on the Street: Juliette Binoche won an Academy Award for her role in The English Patient (1996).

My Take: I loved Binoche as Sophie Broussard in the Tv mini-series The Staircase.

Hello, Goodbye, and Everyting in Between

Hello, Goodbye, and Everything in Between     (2022)

Release Date: Premiering on the Netflix platform on Wednesday, July 6, 2022.

Summary: Hello, Goodbye and Everything in Between is about Claire (Talia Ryder) and Aidan (Jordan Fisher), who have been high school sweethearts, in love and having a great time together. However, they made a pact; they would break up before going off to college. Before they break up, they will spend one last night revisiting important places that made their relationship meaningful. The question is, will they break up or stay together before the end of the night?

What to Watch For: The film is based on the novel of the same name by Jennifer Elizabeth Smith. Smith has had four other books optioned to become movies, including the upcoming The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight starring Haley Lu Richardson.

Word on the Street: Talia Ryder is coming off her role as Tessa in West Side Story (2021).

My Take: Julia Benson, who has a role in this film, is a favorite of mine from her role as 2nd Lt. Vanessa James in the Sci-Fi series Stargate Universe.

The Road to Galena

Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Friday, July 8, 2022.

Summary: The Road to Galena is about Cole (Ben Winchell), a man who has everything you could want: a beautiful wife, a successful career as a lawyer on the fast track, and a wonderful house in a big city. However, Cole has always done what was expected of him, what his powerful father wanted him to do. Now Cole has a chance to go back to the small community he grew up in and do something he has dreamed of since he was a child: become a farmer.

What to Watch For: Ben Winchell is known for his roles on the TV series A.N.T. Farm as Dixon and Ben on Finding Carter.

Word on the Street: Aimee Teegarden plays Elle, the girl that Cole left behind to go off to D.C.. Teegarden is best known for her role as Julie Taylor on Friday Night Lights.

My Take: One of my all-time favorite actresses, Margaret Colin, is in this film. I have been a fan of Colin since her days as Margo Montgomery on the soap As the World Turns. You might know Margaret Colin for her role as Eleanor Waldorf on Gossip Girl.
