‘Cobra Kai’ Season 5: Release Date, Cast, And What We Currently Know

Cobra Kai Season 5

Fans of the Karate Kid movies have been loving the Netflix series that expanded upon the original storyline. We’re now onto Cobra Kai Season 5 and fans can’t wait to see what’s next for the dojos.

Let’s talk about everything we know so far about the upcoming season of Cobra Kai.

Cobra Kai Season 5 Production

Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald brought the Karate Kid universe back to life with Cobra Kai as a YouTube Red series. Since then, Netflix has taken up the helm and beefed up the budget for the show on the streaming service.

Josh Heald mentioned that the writers had started working on Cobra Kai Season 5 as early as July 2021. The cast and crew began filming in September 2021 and wrapped by December of the same year. While most of the filming happened in Atlanta, Georgia, the parts of the season taking place in Mexico were filmed in Puerto Rico.

Once post-production began in March 2022, the composer of the show, Zach Robinson, tweeted that they were working on producing the score.

We got an update on April 17, 2022 via Tweet from Jon Hurwitz, saying, “S5 is fully edited and awesome! Still mixing the second half and working on the score with our composers. Loving some new musical themes!”

Cobra Kai Season 5 Plot

This season, we’ll see Terry Silver planning to franchise his dojo across LA. He took over at the end of Season 4 when he framed John Kreese (Martin Kove) for the assault of Stingray. Unhappy with Silver’s aggressive teaching tactics, Daniel LaRusso plans to stop his expansion. He will put aside his past rivalries with Chozen Toguchi to team up against Silver. However, we won’t just see the characters battling it out in LA. Johnny will go to Mexico with his son Robby in search of Miguel. Miguel left LA at the end of Season 4 in hopes that he would find his father.

If you’ve enjoyed Sam’s plot so far, Mary Mouser (the actress behind the character), predicts fans will enjoy this season’s direction. She told Deadline, “In my opinion, Samantha has much bigger fish to fry than boys at the moment. I think she’s got a family legacy to figure out at the moment, maybe. We’ll see. Samantha’s love life is one of my most favorite things because I just get to have so much fun hanging out with my friends on set and I get to call it work. I think people will be happy.” Does that mean she’ll make time to rekindle her romance with Robby?

Bringing Back the Character of Chozen

On bringing back Chozen to the Karate Kid universe, Josh Heald says, We obviously know that Chozen’s coming back into the fold, and Daniel, who we find at the ultimate depth of his loss, is feeling defeated and feeling like he made a deal with the devil. He’s realizing that to allow Miyagi-Do to be extinguished this way doesn’t sit well. There are times where the fight has to change, and what better moment than for Chozen to come back into this story and to lean into that part of Miyagi-Do.”

“Chozen is somebody who ties into the more aggressive past where fighting wasn’t about a contest, it was about life and death. He still feels like he owes Daniel some help, and he wants to make amends even though Daniel has forgiven him. From that alone, I feel like audiences can infer the energy with which Season 5 is going to begin. There are quite a bit of storylines that start spinning very fast and very aggressively as we enter next season.” Heald continues.

It’s more significant than simply calling back to the original movies. This theme of trusting historical enemies shows the depth of Daniel’s desperation. He wouldn’t work with Chozen unless he truly needed his help.

Cobra Kai Season 5 Cast

Cobra Kai Season 5 Cast

Cobra Kai’s central premise revolves around the complicated friendship/rivalry between Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence. This conflict began in the original Karate Kid that was released back in 1984. So of course Ralph Macchio and William Zabka will return for Cobra Kai Season 5. That means that the OG bad guy John Kreese, played by Martin Kove, will return alongside his back-stabbing right-hand man, Terry Silver, played by Thomas Ian Griffith.

The Karate Kid II enemy, Chozen, will return to the Karate Kid universe, so we’ll see Yuki Okumoto once again.

But Cobra Kai goes beyond the original conflicts of the movies. Now there’s a new generation of karate kids, both the kids at the dojo and the children of the original characters.

The Cobra Kai kids returning include Tony played by Peyton List and Kyler played by Joe Seo. We also have Robby, played by Tanner Buchanaa, alongside Kenny played by Dallas Depree Young.

But for Miyagi-Do, there’s Mary Mouser playing Sam, Jacob Bertrand playing Eli/Hawk, and Gianni DeCenzo playing Demetri. Miguel, played by Xolo Maridueña, has no dojo affiliation. Anthony LaRusso (Griffin Santopietro), Daniel’s son, didn’t show an interest in karate until the fourth season, but now studies the art. While Paul Walter Hauser’s Stingray was noticeably absent in Season 3, he will be back for Season 5.

The release date announcement came along with a trailer for us to enjoy. It teases the upcoming battle as Cobra Kai spreads across Los Angeles following the success of the All-Valley Tournament.

Cobra Kai Season 5 Release Date

Since COVID, rarely can we say a show was released ahead of schedule. With Cobra Kai’s previous seasons dropping around New Years, a fall release seemed unlikely.

However, Netflix has announced that we will get Cobra Kai Season 5 on the streaming service on September 9, 2022. While we wait for September to roll around, you can go back and revisit the twists and turns of Cobra Kai Season 4 on Netflix to get pumped for the upcoming season of Cobra Kai.
