‘The Sex Lives of College Girls’ Season 2: Everything We Currently Know

The Sex Lives of College Girls Season 2

The Sex Lives of College Girls Season 2 is heading back to HBO Max on November 18, 2022. And with the new season, penned by Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble, fans can expect all the craziness from Season 1 to return – on a bigger scale. College life, academic integrity violations, sexual harassment, sexuality exploration, and a whole lot of sex – the story continues with this fall’s new season.

Before the finale of the first season dropped, HBO Max already renewed the next season. So what’s to come for Kimberly, Bela, Leighton, and Whitney? Will this year at Essex have in store bring them closer together or tear them apart? And who’s next in line on their list of sexual conquests?

Let’s talk about everything we know so far about The Sex Lives of College Girls Season 2.

So who will return for the next semester of The Sex Lives of College Girls?

Well, we of course have the four college girls we’re following the sex lives of: Kimberly (Pauline Chalamet), Bela (Amrit Kaur), Leighton (Reneé Rapp), and Whitney (Alyah Chanelle Scott).

But who else will return? And will we see new characters join the college?

We expect Midori Francis to return as Alicia, Chris Meyer to return as Canaan, Ilia Isorelýs Paulino to return as Lila, Lauren Spencer to return as Jocelyn, and Renika Williams to return as Willow.

Bela’s comedy writers will likely return as well, with Mekki Leeper as Eric and Sierra Katow as Evangeline.

The parents might also come back for a few episodes. Those include Sherri Shepherd as Whitney’s mom, Senator Evette Chase, Rob Huebel as Leighton’s dad, Henry, Nicole Sullivan as Kimberly’s mom, Carol, and Bela’s parents, Mueen Jahan as Nevaan and Kavi Ramachandran Ladnier as Reena.

We have reports of a new student joining campus! Actor Mitchell Slaggert has been onboarded as a series regular joining Essex College.

But one name is notably absent; where’s Nico Murray? Unfortunately, Gavin Leatherwood will not return to The Sex Life of College Girls Season 2. He has chosen to pursue other creative projects at this time as he’s looking to start “branching off and going in a different direction.” He says, “With so many amazing opportunities out there, we want to keep spreading our wings and leading ourselves to other projects so that’s the move.” We wonder what other TV shows we’ll see him on in the future.

Plans for The Sex Lives of College Girls Season 2 Plotlines

So what’s in store for the returning characters? Mindy Kaling, co-creator of the show, told reporters, “It’s called The Sex Lives of College Girls for a reason and I think all four of the girls are fun and experimenting and doing lots of fun stuff…There’s more heartbreak, there’s a lot more sex and there’s some really funny new characters and some new hot guys.” On the reasoning for the show’s content, she explained, “I grew up very repressed so this show is so sexy and sexual. Like, let’s be honest, it’s sexual. There are things that shock me and I’m the creator of the show! I’m like, ‘Wow, OK.’ But nothing is just shock for shock value. It’s really funny and I think people will feel it’s relatable.”

If you need a refresher on where we left off, here’s a quick summary, so spoiler alert!

At the end of The Sex Lives of College Girls Season 1, Kimberly stole tests from the Theta fraternity to help herself at her academic hearing. While she didn’t get expelled from the college, she did lose her scholarship.

Leighton and Alicia broke up, and Leighton used that opportunity to come out to Kimberly as a lesbian. After experiencing sexual harassment at Catullan, Bela decided to start her own comedy group with other female writers. To top it all off, Whitney confessed to her mom about the affair she had with a married soccer coach.

So here’s where we expect to head in The Sex Life of College Girls Season 2!

Whitney’s Love Life

Alyah Chanelle Scott, the actress playing Whitney, expressed what she hopes Whitney will experience in the next season. She says, “Personally, I hope Whitney has a moment of coming into herself and her identity. I feel like she’s been compartmentalizing and running from a lot of things and hasn’t fully had a second to be by herself, and to figure out herself, and come into her identity in all types of ways, like racial identity at this place and all of these things I want that for her so badly.”

Whitney is coming out of the affair with her soccer coach, so she’s experiencing a pretty messy love life. Scott hopes that her character will kindle something with Canaan, played by Chris Meyer. She says of the actor, “he is just one of the coolest, most naturally funny people ever, so filming anything with him is the best time and I always love watching it back. I’m just glad we get to Canaan,” she told EW. “[More] Canaan [in season 2] — that would be really great.” And the co-creator and showrunner Justin Noble ships the pair. He says, “They are so charming…I love watching them together. Alyah and Chris are just so fantastic, and the screen just loves them together…So hopefully better things on the horizon for Whitney, romantically, and in all other ways.”

Apart from Whitney’s love life, actress Alyah Chanelle Scott says her hopes for The Sex Life of College Girls Season 2 include seeing “that friendship with the four of them really solidify…You see it by the end of the season…But I want to see them really settle in and it get really familiar and maybe even a little messy.”

Leighton’s Love Life

So what’s in store for Leighton in The Sex Lives of College Girls Season 2?

At the end of Season 1, we see her come out to Kimberly as a lesbian. But where will Season 2 take her in regards to where she stands in the closet?

Showrunner and co-creator Justin Noble teased reporters about what she could do next season. “Will it be a secret between the two of them that the other two suitemates don’t know about? Will Leighton jump out of the closet with two feet? That remains to be seen.”

But as far as whether or not Leighton will get back together with Alicia, Noble was a bit more open about his own opinions and hopes. He considers Alicia one of his “absolute favorite characters…Midori is so incredibly talented and magnetic and watchable. And the chemistry between her and Reneé, who I think the absolute world of as a performer, is something that I can’t imagine not giving myself more of as a viewer, let alone the writer.”

It sounds like if he gets his way, we’ll see a lot more Leighton and Alicia material.

Kimberly’s In Hot Water

Kimberly doesn’t come out of Season 1 unscathed. While she avoided expulsion, she lost her scholarship.

On top of that, her character lost her love interest.

With Gavin Leatherwood choosing not to return, we’ve lost Nico and Kimberly’s chemistry. While things were pretty much over after we discovered he had a secret girlfriend, any hopes of them ever hooking up in the future are nonexistent without the actor.

And even with that relationship gone, we don’t see her getting along with any of the other frat members in the future. They won’t be too pleased about her stealing the tests and using them in her academic hearing.

As far as where she’s headed, actress Pauline Chalamet just said, “We can expect that Kimberly is going to be exploring her options.”

What’s Next for Bela?

At the end of Season 1, we see Bela leaving the Catullan after experiencing sexual harassment. It’s an upsetting time for her, but showrunner and co-creator Noble assures us that “better things are on the horizon for Bela.” Not only is she posed to start an all-female comedy troupe, we’ll likely see Eric and Bela continue to hit it off.

Noble told TVLine, “A seed has been planted, yes. Both Amrit and Mekki, who plays Eric, are just so hilarious and fun together. And we should be seeing some more of Bela and Eric in the future.”
