The newest addition to the reality TV realm is that of Hitched or Ditched, a terrifying new series about either tying the knot or saying good bye forever. As a girl in a long term relationship myself, I couldn’t help but watch the two review episodes of this series and cringe at the idea of this being me. While I can see what might push so-called friends to set up their favorite… or least favorite couple to do this, I can’t imagine what it must feel like to know there is enough drama in your relationship for reality TV to come knocking. Seriously ladies, if there is that much doubt whether or not he will say yes, you shouldn’t be getting hitched.
But as with most reality TV programming, the drama is nothing short of entertaining. Trying to figure out how some of these couples managed to go on a second date almost makes it into a game for you the viewer, whereas other times you can’t help but feel sorry for the couple who has everyone rooting against them. Needless to say, everyone has their opinion and they’re not afraid to voice it. Video cameras be damned, they’re going to be heard.
Obstacles such as jealousy, trust, family, and commitment issues seem to be the general handicaps these couples face, but after being together anywhere from 3 to 10 years it’s easy for the viewer to agree – it’s time to put up or shut up.
With an onslaught of summer reality programming on its way, Hitched or Ditched will have some stiff competition. But if you like watching real drama, lives unraveled, lots of crying, and the occasional happy ending, then this is definitely one you want to check out.
Check out the premiere next Tuesday, May 26th (9-10p.m. ET)
