Early Life

Mayim Chaya Bialik was born in San Diego, California, on December 12th, 1975. Her late father Barry and mother Beverly were both Jewish immigrants. Bialik was an only child and was raised in the beliefs of Reform Judaism. However, Bialik considers herself more of an aspiring Modern Orthodox.

Bialik graduated from North Hollywood High School in 1993. She didn’t immediately go to university though. Because she already had an active acting career at the time. Later on, though, she enrolled at UCLA, with a major in neuroscience and a minor in Hebrew and Jewish Studies. She graduated in 2000 with a BS degree.

It was originally her plan to earn a doctorate in neuroscience immediately afterward. However, she decided to postpone it for a while in order to focus on her acting career. She went back to her studies in 2007. And eventually, she earned her Ph.D. in neuroscience. This might have helped make her acting as Dr. Amy Farrah Fowler on the sitcom, The Big Bang Theory a lot more believable.

Acting Career

The first role that Bialik played was in the horror movie Pumpkinhead in 1988. She was just 13 years old at the time. But it was for her role in Beaches later on in the same year that she was more recognized. She played the younger version of C.C. Bloom, which was Bette Midler’s character in the movie.

Bialik also took on several guest roles on TV, appearing in some of the most popular shows at the time. Some of the more notable ones were Webster, The Facts of Life, Empty Nest, Doogie Howser, and MacGyver. In 1990, she was cast as Blossom Russo in the hit NBC show Blossom. She was in all 114 episodes of the show, causing her celebrity net worth to steady increase over the run of the series from 1990 to 1995.

The actress has also expanded her horizons into directing and producing. 2020 marked the release of the first film that she directed and also wrote, As Sick As They Made Us. In 2012, she published her first book entitled “Beyond the Sling: A Real-Life Guide to Raising Confident, Loving Children the Attachment Parenting Way”. Renowned pediatrician Jay Gordon wrote the introduction to the book.

In 2014, Bialik collaborated with Gordon in creating her second book, “Mayim’s Vegan Table: More Than 100 Great-Tasting and Healthy Recipes from My Family to Yours”. Bialik had only been married once. However, the star is now divorced. Her ex-husband is Michael Stone, who she met in a chemistry class while attending UCLA. Their marriage lasted from 2003 to 2013. The reason cited for their separation was irreconcilable differences. Stone converted from Mormonism to Judaism prior to their marriage.

Their marriage produced two sons. Miles was born in 2005 and Frederick was born in 2008. Bialik is very outspoken about the principles of attachment parenting, which she uses in raising her children. In 2009, she became an official representative for the Holistic Moms Network.

She is also one of the founders of the Jewish nonprofit group called Shamayim V’Aretz Institute. The organization is based on the principles of animal advocacy and veganism. Bialik is also one of the owners of Bodhi Bowl, which is a vegan restaurant in LA. Her co-owner is a close friend and renowned chef Ali Cruddas.
