Ana Celia de Armas Caso was born in Havana, Cuba on April 30, 1988. Her father, Ramon, had worked as a principal, teacher, deputy mayor, and bank manager. Her mother, Ana, worked for the Ministry of Education. She also has an older brother named Javier, who is now a photographer in New York.

Life was not comfortable for their family at the time, relying on food rationing as well as suffering blackouts and fuel shortages. Nevertheless, de Armas recalls having a happy childhood.

The family did not have a DVD player and she was only allowed to watch 20 minutes of Saturday cartoons. But this didn’t stop De Armas from falling in love with Hollywood. She would watch movies at her neighbor’s apartment, which inspired her to become an actress.

When she was 14 years old, de Armas was accepted into the National Theatre of Cuba in Havana. But according to Cuban law, graduates could not leave the country without rendering 3 years of community service first. Because of this, she purposely did not finish the course. When she was 18, she moved to Madrid so that she could pursue her dream of becoming an actress.

Acting Career

While she was a student in Cuba, de Armas appeared in three local films, including Una Rosa de Francia, El Eden Perdido, and Madrigal. During the promotion of these films, she would meet her future Spanish agent, Juan Lanja.

Spain

Shortly after arriving in Spain, de Armas was cast in the popular teen drama series, El Internado. She portrayed the character, Carolina for six seasons, She also appeared in the comedy Mentiras y Gordas.

Then De Armas moved to New York City with the goal of becoming more fluent in English. After a few months, she actually returned to Spain and appeared in the historical drama, Hispania. She also did a few projects with the filmmaker Antonio Trashorra, like El Callejon and Anabel.

Hollywood

It was in 2014 that de Armas decided to take her career a step further by moving to Los Angeles. It was quite a bold move as her English wasn’t great and practically nobody knew her outside of Spain. She was ready for the challenge though and immediately enrolled in English classes upon arrival.

With the help of her Hollywood agent, de Armas secured a role in the Keanu Reeves film Knock Knock one year later. Reeves liked her work and invited her to join the cast of Exposed, a thriller that he would be producing in the year of 2016. In the same year, she then appeared in Hands of Stone and War Dogs. 

In 2017, de Armas’ career was looking bright as she joined the cast of Blade Runner 2049 as a supporting actress. The actress has had a few notable relationships in the past, including one marriage and two engagements. She was married to Spanish actor Marc Clotet in 2011. However, they divorced in 2013 after just 2 years. According to the ex-couple, they are still friends today.

After the divorce, de Armas dated Franklin Latt. They got engaged in 2015 but called it off in 2016. De Armas then dated Alejandro Pineiro, a Cuban artist. The relationship lasted for 2 years and ended in 2019.
