Early Life

Tatiana Gabriele Maslany was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada on September 22, 1985. Her father is a woodworker named Dan. And her mother is a translator named Renate. Maslany is the oldest of three. One of her two younger brothers is also an actor: Daniel Maslany, who is best known as Detective Llewellyn Watts on the Murdoch Mysteries.

Maslany’s cultural background is impressive. Her heritage can be traced back to Germany, Austria, Romania, Poland, and Ukraine. Not to mention, she also speaks some Spanish, and was in French immersion for elementary school. Maslany actually learned German before English, with help from her mother.

The performing arts were in Maslany’s life from a young age. At just four-years-old, she began dancing, and when she hit nine years old, she joined a community theatre.

She continued her upbringing as a performer by participating in productions and improv at Dr. Martin LeBoldus High School. Before graduating in 2003, she secured many paid acting gigs. This allowed her to grow her portfolio and travel all over Canada.

Acting Career

Tatiana Maslany began her professional acting career while still in high school. Her earliest acting credit dates back to 1998 for the children’s television series, Incredible Story Studio

In 2003, the year before Maslany would graduate, she starred in the Canadian TV show 2030 CE. And two years later, she would play the character Ghost in Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed.

In between her various TV and movie roles, she would also perform improv for the next 10 years. Some of this time was spent with the Canadian Improv Games. She’s also a member of the General Fools Improvisational Theatre and is certified as an improv trainer as well.

Before her big breakout with Orphan Black, Maslany had a few other notable roles. These include Heartland, Being Erica, and Flashpoint.

It was her starring role on Orphan Black that made Tatiana Maslany a household name. The show ran for 5 seasons from 2013 to 2017. And it earned Maslany a number of awards and nominations, including a Primetime Emmy Award in 2016,  TCA Award in 2013, 2 Critics’ Choice Awards in 2013 and 2014, and 5 Canadian Screen Awards from 2014 to 2018. Her Emmy win held special significance as she was the first Canadian to win in a major dramatic category for a Canadian series.

Here’s a look into her two most famous TV show roles to date.

Orphan Black

Not only did Maslany play the main character Sarah Manning in the BBC series, but she also played Sarah’s clones. This list included Cosima Niehaus, Helena, Alison Hendrix, Elizabeth Childs, Rachel Duncan, Veera “M.K.” Suominen, Krystal Goderitch, Katja Obinger, Jennifer Fitzsimmons, and Tony Sawicki.

There was no shortage of critics praising Maslany for her ability to play so many character. The Guardian even described her work on the series as, “Olympic-level, endurance acting.”

Despite the insane level of talent required for her work on Orphan Black, Maslany reportedly only made $50,000 per episode. The series itself never had huge ratings. So while many fans would expect that Maslany’s paycheck per episode would be higher, it’s not surprising that it was on the lower end.

Orphan Black was, however, the first major impact to Tatiana Maslany’s net worth. And after the series wrapped, Maslany had no shortage of projects waiting for her. This included 2020’s Perry Mason on HBO, where she’d play Sister Alice McKeegan for 8 episodes.

She-Hulk

Maslany’s latest project sees her joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where she plays the titular character in the Disney+ series, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. She’ll star as Jennifer Walters and her alter-ego She-Hulk in the series.

Back in September 2020, Deadline Hollywood first announced her casting in the new project. She denied it at first. But Marvel Studios would confirm her role in December 2020.

While it’s not known exactly how much Maslany is making from She-Hulk, we do that Marvel is trying to be smart with their spending due to inflation. The series films in Atlanta, Georgia at Trilith Studios. And the studios’ chief executive,Frank Patterson, is quoted by The Hollywood Reporter noting that it costs roughly 15% more to build stages than it did in 2021. And to make matters worse, that’s on top of eight- to 10-month lead times for critical parts and supplies that the production needs, such as electrical boxes and stage doors.

And, even more recently, Maslany and Roth secretly tied the knot. On August 11, 2022, she revealed on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert that she had secretly wed Hines. “There’s certain things you want to kind of keep private, but we felt like you were the right person to tell it to.” Maslany joked with Colbert.
