Julia Fiona Roberts was born on October 28, 1967, in Smyrna, Georgia. Her father is Walter Grady Roberts and her mother is Betty Lou Bredemus. Both of her parents were theater actors and playwrights. So it’s safe to say that acting ran in the family since Roberts’ older brother, Eric Roberts, and older sister, Lisa Roberts Gillan, are also actors. Not to mention, Roberts’ niece is Emma Roberts.

As a child, Roberts went to Fitzhugh Lee Elementary School, then Griffin Middle School. She graduated from Campbell High School and for a while, attended Georgia State University. She left before graduating in order to move to New York and pursue an acting career. Upon her arrival, Roberts joined the Click Modeling Agency and signed up for formal acting classes.

Roberts’s first role was in an episode of the TV series Crime Story in 1987. The next year she would film her first film, Mystic Pizza, which was quickly followed by a supporting role in Steel Magnolias.
