Early Life

Snoop Dogg, formally known as Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., was born in Long Beach, California on October 20, 1971. His biological father, Vernell Varnado, left his wife Beverly Tate and three-week-old Snoop and remained absent from the rapper’s life. Snoop’s mother remarried and decided to give him his stepfather’s name.

The second of three sons, Snoop earned his nickname because of his love for the cartoon Peanuts and the character Snoopy. He showed promising talent in music, singing, and playing piano in front of churchgoers at the Golgotha Trinity Baptist Church.

He started rapping during the sixth grade, finding solace in the hip-hop genre despite his childhood struggles. He worked odd jobs to help with the family’s finances. He sold candy, bagged groceries, and delivered newspapers to make ends meet.

Snoop Dogg’s childhood mainly involved attending church regularly, studying, and playing football. However, the tables started to turn when he reached his teenage years. He joined gangs and engaged in illegal activities despite his mom’s pleading.

He got into the Rollin’ 20s Crips of Eastside Long Beach, California, during his high school years. Shortly after graduation, police arrested him for possession of cocaine. He was in and out of jail for the next three years.

Making music

Snoop, along with his cousins Lil’ ½ Dead and Nate Dogg, and friend Warren G, formed a group called 213. Their name is Long Beach’s old area code, denoting their roots. They later recorded several homemade tapes together.

One of his early solo mixtapes found its way to Dr. Dre. The freestyle impressed the influential producer, making him call Snoop for an audition. His career would later take off from there. The D.O.C., a former NWA affiliate, taught the rapper to observe themes and lyric structures. He learned to separate his songs into hooks, verses, and choruses.

He started his rapping career in 1992, gaining a part in Dr. Dre’s debut solo album The Chronic. A year later, Snoop Dogg released his first solo album released by Death Row Records and produced by Dr. Dre. His album, Doggystyle, charted in the Billboard 200 and took the top spot on the Hip Hop and R&B Albums chart.

Switching labels

Snoop released several more chart-topping singles under Death Row Records. Gin and Juice and Who Am I (What’s My Name) managed to stay on the music charts for several months. These songs joined the top 10 most played in the United States.

However, he decided to switch labels in 1998, signing with Master P’s No Limit Records. His debut with the label, Da Game is to Be Sold, Not to Be Told, was his third studio album. He made a slight change to his stage name from Snoop Doggy Dogg to just Snoop Dogg.

He also released two more albums under No Limit, the No Limit Top Dogg (1999), and Tha Last Meal (2000). These albums sold millions of copies, the third one gaining over two million in sales. These albums are partly the reason for Snoop Dogg’s net worth to grow steadily.

He jumped labels again in 2002, singing with Priority/Capitol/EMI Records. This time, he released Paid tha Cost to Be da Boss which sold a whopping 1.3 million copies. It was at this stage that Snoop embraced a “pimp” persona, away from his “gangster” image.

In 2004, he signed with Star Trak Entertainment/Geffen Records, which are under Interscope Records. He released R&G (Rhythm & Gangsta): The Masterpiece under the new label. Drop It Like It’s Hot gained worldwide fame, making it the rapper’s first single to top the singles charts. The third single, Signs, took the second spot on the UK chart.
