DVD Review: Supernatural Season 5 Blu-ray

“It’s not jumping the shark if you never come back down.”

My favorite line from Season 5 of Supernatural.

It’s no secret the love I have for this series. Since episode 1, 6 years ago – I’ve been in love with the world the writers have created for Sam and Dean. And though, in my opinion, this series is now a completely different series than it was in the beginning, it’s still some of the best television on the air.

When Season 1 started, it was all about fighting the supernatural – ghosts, monsters, vampires, and other creatures that go bump in the night. However, we saw a shift in the tone of the series when Season 4 started. The first episode of that season left many of us with our mouths agape and our minds full of wonder. I still remember that exact moment when Castiel’s wings spread out behind him – and my reaction being “HOLY CRAP.” Since that moment, the series has progressed from angels and demons to the actual Apocalypse. Taking on the Four Horsemen and Lucifer himself, Season 5 takes the series to a new epic level.

Sam and Dean are the chosen ones, and Lucifer must take over Sam’s body where as the Archangel Michael must take over Dean’s. A final fight between brothers to determine the faith of the world. Sam and Dean aren’t exactly on board with this, and spend most of the season trying to find a way to stop what is ultimately inevitable. The boys aren’t alone though. Castiel, the fallen angel (and the always reliable (yet unintentional) comic relief), is beside them to help them fight the battle to end all battles.

Last year, when I spoke with the writers and creator Eric Kripke, I was told that Season 5 was something they were having a blast writing. That there was going to be a lot of humor to help offset the seriousness of the matter at hand. While I found that hard to believe at the time, I have to say I was quite impressed how much I laughed this season. Castiel is my favorite character (Sam and Dean fans don’t kill me!). He had a number of memorable lines and scenes this season that I still quote almost daily. “Assbut”, “I don’t understand. Why does it want my name?”, “This isn’t funny, Dean! The voice says I’m almost out of minutes!”… I could go on, but seeing them in context is absolutely priceless.

Moving forward, I have no idea how the series is going to (in response to the first line of this review) not come back down. Season 5 clearly felt like the end of an incredible story and series to me, and while I don’t want to see it end – I feel like this was the ending. Where do you go after the Apocalypse? The writers said at Comic Con this year that it’s going to be back to the monsters as well as more background on them…. But I’m worried that may be anti-climatic after having watched the final showdown with Lucifer. If that wasn’t enough to be concerned about – Season 6, which starts here on September 24, will be in the infamous Friday night death slot. Though with all that being said, one thing this series has is incredible writers. If any writers can do it – these can.

Back to the DVD though, if you love supernatural things of any sort – this is the show for you. Fans of the series don’t even need a positive review to know that they need to pick this one up. Bottom line is, it’s an incredible series, and this has been an incredible and epic season.

Special features on the Blu-ray edition include: Bobby’s Exclusive Video Collection, Ghostfacers: The Web Series (a must-watch!), commentary, un-aired scenes, and the hilarious and must-see gag reel.

  1. They need to let Misha do commentary on every episode. 🙂 They could release a separate edition of just that and I’d buy it in a heartbeat 🙂
