Early Life

Jennifer Joanna Aniston was born on February 11, 1969, in Sherman Oaks, California. Her father is John Aniston, and her mother is Nancy Dow. Both parents were actors. Her father even received a Daytime Emmy Lifetime Achievement Award before he passed in November 2022.

After Aniston was born, the family moved from California to New York, where Aniston would attend school. Her parents split around the time she was 9. And sadly, Aniston would have a rocky relationship with her mother in the coming years. She described her mom as being very critical, petty, and unforgiving. Thankfully, the two were able to reconcile towards the end of Dow’s life. Dow passed away at 79 years old after suffering back-to-back strokes.

It was at the age of 11 that Aniston started to discover her passion for acting. She went to Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in Manhattan, pursuing her passion. She joined the drama society with Anthony Abeson as her teacher. There, she performed Three Sisters by Anton Chekhov and The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window by Lorraine Hansberry.

Becoming an actress

Jennifer Aniston worked part-time jobs such as waitressing and telemarketing to support her Hollywood dream. She first joined off-Broadway productions like Dancing on Checkers’ Grave and For Dear Life. She appeared in a minor role for Mac and Me in 1988 but was uncredited. A year later, she became Nutrisystem’s spokesmodel on The Howard Stern Show.

In 1990, Aniston bagged her first TV role in Molloy and followed it with the Ferris Bueller TV series, which ran from 1990 to 1991. She starred as Jeannie Bueller and appeared in 13 episodes.

Her big screen debut would come in 1993 with Leprechaun. However, this horror movie wasn’t a hit with fans or critics. She also expressed her embarrassment regarding it.

She would appear on several more television shows leading up til 1994 when she joined the cast of the massively popular Friends TV series. Her character, Rachel Green, stole the hearts of fans from the very first episode. With a great cast and fantastic writing, it’s no surprise that the beautiful and comedic story of five best friends was telecast for 10 seasons.

The cast gained worldwide recognition and Aniston won the Primetime Emmy Award for being Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. She also won a Golden Globe Best Actress Award in 2003. The Guinness Book of World Records lists Aniston and Friends female co-stars as the highest-paid TV actresses of the time.

Friends earnings and royalties

The six main cast members earned around $22,500 per episode during the first season, which contained 24 episodes. This added $540,000 to Jennifer Aniston’s net worth for just the first season of the series. By the third season, fans had utterly fallen in love with Rachel’s on/off relationship with Ross Gellar (played by David Schwimmer). And for this season, Aniston would earn $1.875 million, just shy of four times what she earned in season one.

In 2000, the Friends stars signed a contract granting them royalties from reruns. This was a huge contributor to Aniston’s net worth since each cast member reportedly gets up to $20 million per year from this deal. The show itself continues to gain more than $1 billion annually in streaming deals and syndication royalties.

The said contract negotiations allowed the cast members to gain backend points on the sitcom. At that point, only Bill Cosby and Jerry Seinfeld had the same arrangement. Aniston gets 2% of the royalties share, which is still a considerable percentage despite the show having aired 18 years ago.

In total, before bonuses and royalties, each cast member earned about $90 million from the series!
