Early life

Scarlett Ingrid Johansson was born in Manhattan, New York, on November 22, 1984. She has dual citizenship thanks to her Danish father, Karsten Olaf Johansson, who comes from Copenhagen, Denmark.  Her mother, Melanie Sloan, is a New Yorker who comes from an Ashkenazi Jewish family from Poland and Russia. Johansson also describes herself as Jewish.

Johansson’s parents divorced when she was only thirteen years old. She isn’t an only child, though. She also has a twin brother, Hunter. Additionally, she also has an older sister, Vanessa (who is an actress as well), an older brother Adrian, and a half-brother Christian.

Johansson’s deep desire to become an actress motivated her to enroll at the Lee Strasberg Theater & Film Institute. Initially, she would go on auditions for commercials. But later, she would shift her focus to theater and film. She also attended the Professional Children’s School (PCS) for aspiring young actors in Manhattan.
