Milly Alcock is one of the biggest up-and-coming stars, earning a breakout role as young princess Rhaenyra Targaryen on the hit Game of Thrones spinoff, House of the Dragon

Milly, whose real name is Amelia May Alcock, is from Sydney, Australia and she was born on April 11, 2000. Prior to her role on the new HBO series, Alcock was best known for playing Meg in Upright and Ella in Furlough.

Who Does Milly Alcock Play in House of the Dragon?

Milly Alcock plays princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in House of the Dragon. In the series, Rhaenyra Targaryen was cheered as the Realm’s Delight when she was young. As she got older, she was called the Half-Year Queen. She was the first-born child of King Viserys Targaryen and Queen Aemma.

Rhaenyra Targaryen was made the heir to the Iron Throne at eight years old. Her claim to the throne was challenged by her younger half-brother, Aegon II Targaryen. And the dispute led to a Civil War.

Rhaenyra Targaryen is also a dragonrider. Her dragon is named Syrax. And because of this ability, she is also called the Dragon Queen.

When Did Milly Alcock Start Acting?

Alcock is from Sydney, in New South Wales, Australia. She was interested in acting at a young age. Prior to her appearances on TV, she participated in a few school plays. At age six, she got more interested in acting, and she attended a high school that focuses on the performing arts.

Her first appearance came as a teenager in Wonderland, in 2014. This is a popular Australian television romantic comedy and drama series. It debuted in 2013 and follows four couples as they navigate life, love, and relationships. It is set and filmed in Sydney. The series ran for three seasons, wrapping up in 2015. 

In addition to her role in Wonderland, Alcock also played Isabella Barrett in the 2017 mini-series, High Life. Also in 2017, she starred as Cindi Jackson in Janet King

Alcock has also appeared in a handful of television advertisements, including Cadbury, KFC, NBN, and Woolworth’s.

Did She Go To School?

Milly Alcock went to Sydney’s Newton High School of the Performing Arts. While she always did well in school, she dropped out when she landed a role in Upright, an Australian drama series. She said that the role was something that she simply could not turn down

In Upright, Alcock plays a runaway teenager named Meg. She hitchhikes across 2,000 miles of the Australian outback, famous for its unique wildlife and incredible danger. Her role in Upright is largely considered to be her breakout role. And she even won a Casting Guild of Australia Rising Star award for her performance.

Additionally, she was also nominated for Best Comedy Performer. However, the award went to her co-star in the show, Tim Minchin

Her performance in Upright led to her being considered for other big roles, and she eventually landed her role in House of the Dragon.

Does Alcock Have Any Upcoming Projects?

Milly will be reprising her character in Upright Season 2. She was spotted in Queensland and is believed to be there to film the series. 

And while House of the Dragon has been renewed for Season 2, there is no official word yet whether or not Milly will appear in the new season. Especially since IMDB credits her role in the series as Young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, alluding to the fact that another actress is likely to portray the character at another stage in her life.

She Wanted To Do Something Different Than Her Family

Alcock decided to go into acting because everyone else in her family was not interested in it. When she isn’t away filming a project, she still lives at home with her parents. Her family is more of a rugby household than a creative one, so they spent much of their time watching sports. She decided she wanted to do something different, pushing her into acting.

She Has Two Brothers

Alcock grew up with her two brothers. They focus more on sports than the creative arts. Overall, she is very private, particularly since her family does not have any background in the entertainment world.

Despite being private, she is active on social media. She has an Instagram account, and she shares a lot of candid photos on her feed. And it’s also believed she has a YouTube channel, though it hasn’t been updated in 9 years and isn’t a verified account.

She Didn’t Think She’d Have A Big Role in House of the Dragon

While Alcock was auditioning for her role in House of the Dragon, she initially thought that she would only be in a few flashback scenes. She started auditioning for the role in November 2020. Naturally, because of the size and scope of the series, there was a lot of secrecy involved. She started by filming a few self-tapes. Then, she got a phone call, and she discovered she would have a much larger role in the series. 

She Was Only 11 When Game Of Thrones Premiered

Milly Alcock was only 11 when Game of Thrones originally premiered. So when it came time to audition for House of the Dragon, she would prepare by spending countless hours consuming everything related to the series.

She read the scripts several times and spent a lot of time on the Fire and Ice Wiki page. Not to mention, she’s also said that she spent six hours a day in the local library reading everything on the famed George R. R. Martin fantasy world.

She Hired a Dialect Coach to Learn Rhaenrya’s Accent 

To prepare for her audition and role, she hired a dialect coach. She tried to figure out what Rhaenrya’s accent might sound like to better grasp her character.

She says that her character portrayal has been inspired by a combination of Cate Blanchett and Audrey Hepburn. Even though she plays a regal character, she knows there is discomfort under the surface. She tries to bring that out in her character.
