Joker: Folie à Deux, the upcoming sequel to 2019’s Joker, is currently in pre-production. And while not much is known about the film’s plot, we do know that it will be a musical with a powerhouse cast.
Joaquin Phoenix is already confirmed to be returning as Arthur Fleck, aka Joker. Additionally, Lady Gaga has been confirmed in the role of Harley Quinn. And the latest casting announcement comes with Brendan Gleeson, 67, joining the cast, though it’s currently unclear who the actor will play.
The news comes on the heels of the announcement that Zazie Beetz, best known for Deadpool 2 and FX’s Atlanta, will also return for the second movie to reprise her role as Sophie Dumond.
Joker: Folie à Deux Starts Soon
Production is set to get underway in December. And the motion picture is expected to be released on October 4, 2024.
The title of the movie, which will be directed by Todd Phillips (who helmed the original psychological thriller), is a French phrase. It’s defined as a shared psychosis or shared delusion disorder (SDD) where symptoms are shared by two individuals.
2019’s Joker took home a record breaking $96.2 million at the box office during its opening weekend. In total, it took $1.07 billion internationally, making it highest ever grossing R-Rated movie to date.
Joaquin Phoenix Will Return
Joaquin Phoenix, who plays the titular character, took home an Academy Award for Best Actor for his work in the film. Additionally, Icelandic musician Hildur Guonadottir took home the Academy Award for Original Music Score for the film.
Overall, the movie was nominated for 11 Oscars, including the top prize, Best Picture, and Best Director for Phillips.
Lady Gaga Joins Joker: Folie à Deux
In June, it was revealed Lady Gaga was in early talks to star in the sequel in the role of Harley Quinn. The character was played by Margot Robbie in 2016 and 2021 movies Suicide Squad and The Suicide Squad. The character has an on/off abusive relationship with Joker.
Phillips has been working on the script for the sequel with Scott Silver, who he co-wrote the first movie alongside.
