Is ‘The NeverEnding Story’ Getting a Reboot?
The NeverEnding Story reboot might be right around the corner! Reports are surfacing that studios and streaming services have been trying to buy the rights to the film.
Deadline is reporting that the rights to the book by Michael Ende, which the original 1984 film was based on, are at the center of a bidding war. The news comes on the hills of Stranger Things featuring the movie’s theme song in its most recent season.
The theme song by pop singer Limahl, which shares the same title as the film, racked up millions of hits on YouTube after featuring in the show and even spawned the #NeverEndingChallenge.
The game was further popularized by Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown and involved lip-syncing to the scene in the series in which two character sing the theme song.
There has been no shortage of interest in a The NeverEnding Story reboot over the years. But attempts have fell flat due to issues securing the rights to the book.
The original film starred Barret Oliver as Bastian and Noah Hathaway as Atreyu. And it told the story of a boy who stumbles across a magical book about a young hero going on an incredible adventure to save the world of Fantasia.
However, the film sparked a lawsuit from Michael Ende, author of the book. He accused movie bosses of deviating too much from his original story.
