Blonde is the story of Norma Jeane (Ana de Armas), who became the most famous movie star of the 50s and 60s, Marilyn Monroe. From her traumatic childhood through her rise to stardom, exploited by almost every man she knew, Norma Jeane tried to remain herself, which cost Norma Jeane her life.
What to Watch For
The film is a fictional account of Marilyn Monroe’s life based upon the novel by Joyce Carol Oates.
Word on the Street
The film has been given the NC-17 rating, meaning no one under 17 years of age can be admitted. The last successful NC-17 picture at the box office was in 1995s Showgirls.
My Take
Many film critics I have talked to think that Ana de Armas is a certain nominee for Best Actress at the Academy Awards.
Don’t Worry Darling (2022)

Summary
In Don’t Worry Darling, a young housewife, Alice (Florence Pugh), is living in a community with her husband, Jack (Harry Styles), that seems to be perfect. However, this community is hiding something, and the more Alice looks into it, the closer she comes to unveiling secrets that may cost her marriage and maybe, even her life.
What to Watch For
The film is directed by Olivia Wilde, who also appears in the film as Alice’s best friend and neighbor Bunny.

The hilltop headquarters of the Victory Corporation in the film is a real house located in the Mojave Desert.
My Take
It will be interesting to see how this film does at the box office after all the publicity it has received.
Catherine Called Birdy (2022)

Summary
Catherine Called Birdy is about Lady Catherine (Bella Ramsey), who likes to be called Birdy, and the last thing Birdy wants is to be married off to someone she doesn’t love because her father, Sir Rollo (Andrew Scott), needs the money. Conversely, Birdy will lie, cheat, and do anything else she can think of to defeat her father’s wishes.
What to Watch For
The film is written and directed by Lena Dunham, the eight-time Emmy-nominated creator of the TV show Girls.

The film is based on the Newberry-winning novel of the same name by Karen Cushman. Dunham has dreamed of making the novel into a movie since she read the book at age ten.
My Take
Billie Piper plays Lady Aislinn in the movie. I have been a fan of Piper since she played Rose on the TV series Doctor Who.
Carmen (2022)

Summary

The film won Best Feature at the 2022 Canadian Film Fest.

My Take
Natascha McElhone has been wowing audiences with her performances since her feature-film debut in Merchant Ivory’s 1996 film Surviving Picasso.
Lou (2022)

Jurnee Smollett is coming off an Emmy nomination for her role as Letitia Lewis in the TV series Lovecraft Country.

My Take
I am a huge fan of Poitier and love his films, including To Sir With Love (1967), In the Heat of the Night (1967), and Buck and the Preacher (1972).
On the Come Up (2022)

Summary
On the Come Up is about Bri (Jamila Gray), a 16-year-old-girl whose father was a legendary rapper. Bri feels it is her destiny to become a famous rapper.
She goes to nightly rap battles, hoping to be discovered by a record company. But first, Bri must believe in herself. Because she doesn’t just want to make it; she has to make it.
What to Watch For
The film is based on the novel of the same name by Angie Thomas, who also wrote The Hate U Give.

My Take
This is the feature-film directorial debut from Sanna Lathan, who was nominated for an Emmy for her role in the TV series Succession.
