Should the ‘Jurassic Park’ Sequels Never Have Been Made? Director Colin Trevorrow Says No.

Jurassic Park Sequels

Should the Jurassic Park sequels never have been made? More specifically, should the Jurassic World movies never been made? It’s a fair question considering the response from film critics. Even Jurassic World Dominion director Colin Trevorrow is asking the same question. In fact, Trevorrow is saying the sequels shouldn’t have been made.

The 46-year-old filmmaker is now suggesting that Steven Spielberg’s original 1993 film should have been a standalone movie as the series is “inherently un-franchisable”.

“There probably should have only been one ‘Jurassic Park’. But if we’re gonna do it, how can I allow them to tell stories in a world which dinosaurs exist, as opposed to, here’s another reason why we’re going to an island?” Colin says to Empire magazine.

The Jurassic Park Sequels Have Been A Hit With Fans

However, the same sentiment doesn’t appear to be shared among fans, who have made continually made all the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World films massive successes at the box office.

Most recently, Jurassic World Dominion, which had a budget of $165 million earned $997.8 million at the worldwide box office. And that number doesn’t even include the sell of merchandise or the recent DVD release.

The previous Jurassic World films were even more successful. 2015’s Jurassic World, the first reboot of the franchise, earned over $1.67 billion worldwide on its $150 million budget. And 2018’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom earned $1.31 billion worldwide on its $170 million budget.

In fact, the Jurassic World films have been even more successful at the box office than the original films. 1993’s Jurassic Park brought in $1.1 billion worldwide on just a $63 million budget. 1997’s The Lost World brought in even less with a global box office gross of $618 million on its $73 million budget. And the least successful of all the films in the franchise was 2001’s Jurassic Park 3 which earned $368 million worldwide on a $93 million budget.

Colin Trevorrow Wanted to Do Something Different with Jurassic World Dominion

When Colin Trevorrow signed on to direct what has been billed as the close to the Jurassic World trilogy, he said that he wanted to do something a bit different.

“I specifically did something different than the other films in order to change the DNA of the franchise,” Trevorrow explains in the interview with Empire. “The previous five films are plots about dinosaurs. This one is a story about characters in a world in which they coexist with dinosaurs.”

He went on to say that he hoped that the new characters that Jurassic World Dominion introduced will allow for the franchise to continue for a “new generation”, implying there may be more films to come from the Jurassic Park universe.

There’s More Jurassic Park to Come…

“This movie clearly takes a real interest in creating new characters that a new generation is going to latch on to… Kayla Watts (DeWanda Wise) and Mamoudou Athie’s character Ramsay Cole, who I think, in the Extended Edition, you really feel his purpose in a greater way.” Trevorrow, who has directed all three of the Jurassic World films, adds.

“And Dichen Lachman’s character (Soyona Santos), who just gets arrested at the end. There’s more to come.” Trevorrow teases.

While Jurassic World Dominion was the least successful of the Jurassic World films in terms of box office earnings, it still was a massive hit, especially considering the interesting year that 2022 has been for fans making their way back to theaters after Covid-19.
