What Does the Future of the James Bond Franchise Look Like?

James Bond

With Daniel Craig’s time as 007 now over, many have been left wondering, what does the future of the James Bond franchise have in store for fans? Right now, the future of the franchise isn’t that clear. We know there are more films coming. But sadly, it will likely be a while before we have another Bond film. Here’s what we currently know.

Furthermore, producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson are planning a different trajectory for the James Bond franchise moving forward. And they are still actively searching for a new actor to take on the role.

How Is Casting Going for the Next James Bond?

“When you change the actor you have to reimagine the direction the film’s gonna go on. When you hire an actor, you’re hoping you’re going to spend a decade at least with them and make four or five or six films with them,” Broccoli says in a recent interview with Empire Magazine. “So you have to think through, ‘What is the trajectory? What is that actor going to bring? How are you going to move the series into another direction?'”

“It’s not just flicking through ‘Spotlight’ and saying, ‘Oh, there’s a guy who’s 6’1’.” she adds.

So when will know who will be the next James Bond? Broccoli also noted that she and Wilson are being patient as they look for Craig’s replacement. So it may take a little time for the announcement to come.

“We’re going to take our time. We want to get a sense of where we want to go with the series and we want to do that before we bring anybody else on. We’ll start the process probably with (writers) Rob (Wade) and Neil (Purvis) and we’ll see where we go!” Broccoli reveals.

No Time To Die DVD Review

The ending of No Time To Die saw Craig’s Bond sacrifice himself in order to save the life of his love interest, Dr. Madeleine Swann (Lea Seydoux), as well as his daughter Mathilde. Recalling the moment when audiences first saw the film’s ending is something that Broccoli still vividly remembers.

“It was incredible at the ‘No Time To Die’ premiere with 4,000 people and you could hear all the people, their breath and their heartbeats and they’re going, ‘This isn’t happening…’ And it happens.” Broccoli says.

It Will Be A While Before We Have More James Bond Content

For now, fans shouldn’t expect any more Bond content in the near future, as casting announcements will come before filming begins. And of course, actual production and post-production will take some time as well. So, it’s likely to be a few years before we truly know what the future of Bond will look like.

In the meantime, both Broccoli and Wilson have their hands full working on the upcoming thriller, Remote Control. The film stars Gerard Butler and follows a British corporate intelligence analyst who finds himself tangled up in a conspiracy to destabilize the Chinese economy.

Who Could Be The Next James Bond?

Recently, there’s been no shortage of talk about who could fill the iconic shoes of 007. And Henry Cavill’s name has been a part of several of those conversations. But, having been up for the role before Daniel Craig was cast, Cavill has said he wasn’t ready to play James Bond yet, despite being in the final audition stage more than 15 years ago.

“They told me I was close. They told me it was ultimately down to, and this is what I’ve been told, it was just down to me and Daniel [Craig]. And I was the younger option. They obviously went with Daniel and I think it was an amazing choice to go with Daniel.” Cavill revealed on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

“I probably wasn’t ready at the time and I think Daniel did an incredible job over the past movies, so I’m happy they made that choice.” Cavill added.

Also up for the role at the time was Doctor Who‘s David Tennat and Outlander‘s Sam Heughan.

Will the Next James Bond Be Younger?

Now knowing that at the time, producers had considered a younger and older version of Bond for 2006’s Casino Royale. Does that mean we’re likely looking at a younger Bond for the next 007? It’s not likely according to Wilson.

“We’ve tried looking at younger people in the past. But trying to visualize it doesn’t work,” Wilson said in an interview with People. “Remember, Bond’s already a veteran. He’s had some experience. He’s a person who has been through the wars, so to speak.”

“He isn’t some kid out of high school that you can bring in and start off. That’s why it works for a 30-something,” he added.

What About Regé-Jean Page?

Bridgerton star Regé-Jean Page‘s name continues to come in conversation as well. And Page has two pretty big fans advocating for him to be considered.

“He’s fantastic. I mean, he has more charisma in his pinky than most people do in their entire body. So you know, we’d watch him do anything – I mean we’d watch him read the phonebook!” Director Joe Russo told RadioTimes.com earlier this year.

Page himself commented on the rumors, saying, “Ah, the B word. I think if you are British and do anything of note, that other people take notice of, then people will start talking about that. That’s fairly normal and I’m flattered to be in the category of Brits that people have noticed.”

  1. The only way another viable and popular movie will ever be made in the James Bond franchise is to open up the checkbook and pay Daniel Craig whatever he wants to do another one. Hollywood has been resurrecting dead characters for as long as there’s been movies. You could have other 007 plots but they won’t be James Bond unless prequels are done and I truly doubt that any real Bond fan would be interested in that. Bond actors can and have been changed but they continued with Lames Bond not just 007. Daniel Craig was, by far, the best Bond yet. Why screw with what works?

  2. I’ve been a connoisseur of the Bond genre. My father introduced me to Bond back in the seventies. Although I am a fan of the quintessential Sean Connery version. I was a heavy critic of all the following actors who portrayed Bond and Strongly against Daniel Craig. Naturally Casino Royale proved to me that I was dead wrong. It would be biased of me to think a woman couldn’t bring it so I say at least maybe it’s time to shatter that ceiling and let a woman have the role. Women are proving more and more every day they are just as strong and capable. It’s time for them to shine and there are many out there. Zendaya for one would be excellent. She has the talent and the pitch and I have seen her show her range all across her work. She has the sex appeal too. My vote is cast for her to be the next 007. Doesn’t have to be James Bond but something more strong and feminine.
