‘Ringer’ Review: Pilot

Last night, Ringer premiered on the CW. I had a lot of thoughts on this show. First off, I have to say that this show is definitely exciting, but it’s also very confusing. Within the first 15 minutes, I’m utterly lost. Ringer‘ didn’t necessarily spend a lot of time establishing characters. It actually just jumped right into the action. I didn’t really enjoy the show until about 20 minutes in. After that, I was gasping, fanning myself, and going completely crazy over this show!

The show starts off with the fabulous Sarah Michelle Gellar looking terrified. I mean, I would too if a strange man in a mask came after me.

“You have the wrong girl!”

The quote above explains the show perfectly. One twin taking over the other’s life. Honestly? I keep thinking about ‘The Lying Game,’ yet it’s more adult. That’s one thing I like about this show. Most of the shows on the CW are more young adult, teen shows. Such as, 90210, Gossip Girl, The Vampire Diaries, etc. It’s nice to have another mature item on the channel.

It is revealed that Bridget (Sarah Michelle Gellar) is a recovering alcoholic. It turns out that she witnessed a murder, and had to testify. The only problem is that she didn’t. She ran away (and assaulted/stole a gun from a cop) before she could. She ended up staying with her twin sister, Siobhan (Also portrayed by Sarah Michelle Gellar), whom she hasn’t spoken to in years. Later, Siobhan admits to Bridget that her husband has no clue of Bridget’s existence. Ouch.

While the sisters are spending the day together on a boat, somewhere along the way, Siobhan disappears. It’s pretty obvious that Bridget is a very dark sleeper. Apparently, the first thing to come to Bridget’s mind was to search for her sister, then take over her life. This event leads to Bridget finding out some very dark secrets about her sister’s past.

What frustrated me, was the fact that we barely knew a single thing about our characters. Luckily, they changed that fast. We soon find out that Siobhan’s life is extremely complicated. It turns out that she is a manipulative person who has a struggling marriage. Not only that, she is also having an affair with her best friend’s husband. Ugh, wow. As if things couldn’t get any more complicated, it turns out that Siobhan was also pregnant. Talk about a lot happening!

Throughout the whole pilot, it shows Bridget’s struggle in keeping up her act as Siobhan. By the end of the episode, it is revealed that the strange, masked man, who was trying to kill Bridget, was actually trying to kill Siobhan. Not only that, but it turns out that Siobhan is actually alive.

By the end of the pilot, my head was reeling! So much information! I honestly did enjoy it, and I’m really looking forward to seeing where this show ends up!

Rating: B+

Side note: I’m in love with Ioan Gruffudd! His character may be hard to love, but that accent! You can’t hate a man with such an amazing accent! Okay, done.

Questions:

  • What are your thoughts on the new show?
  • Who is your favorite character thus far?
  • Why do you think the masked man was after Siobhan?

Catch Ringer, Tuesday’s at 9/8c on the CW!
