‘The Vampire Diaries’ Recap: The Hybrid

Hybrids, and ghosts, and psychotic fathers, oh my! We had another amazing episode this week! As always, Vampire Diaries does not disappoint.

This week’s episode starts off with Elena (Nina Dobrev) on a mission. After the phone call situation, Elena is even more dead-set on finding Stefan (Paul Wesley). She believes that there’s hope, though Damon (Ian Somerhalder) thinks otherwise.

“We went through this, Elena. Stefan’s gone, and I don’t mean geographically.” -Damon

Well, you can cross Damon off on the list of people willing to help Stefan. This leads to Elena asking her shirtless history teacher.

“They’ve been tracking werewolves. He and Klaus all up the eastern seaboard.” -Alaric (Matt Davis)

This begins our journey all the way in the Smoky Mountains, Tennessee. Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and Stefan finally find what they’re looking for. As they reach the top of the mountain, they find a huge pack of werewolves. Uh oh, this cannot be good. At all.

Back in Mystic Falls, Matt (Zach Roerig) and Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) are going to attempt to do a seance. Let me just say that last season, Tyler (Michael Trevino) and Jeremy had a bromance over drawing and a werewolf curse. Now, it’s Matt and Jeremy and they’re bonding over ghosts and spirits? Can Jeremy make friends without something supernatural involved? Oh, right…

Meanwhile, Elena and Tyler have a little chat.

“A lot of us like to keep to ourselves for the full moon, chain ourselves up. But there are some werewolves that like to gather in places where they don’t have to do that. Where they can enjoy it.” -Tyler

Two things. One, road trip! Two, who votes that we have more Tyler and Elena scenes? Yes!

Also, it turns out that Caroline (Candice Accola) usually helps Tyler with his transformation. Aw. Sadly, she’s nowhere to be found, and Tyler’s tasting vervain. Cue Carol Lockwood and a stranger named Bill (Jack Coleman).

“She’s a vampire, Carol. We do what we have to do.” -Bill

If he lays a hand on our Vampire Barbie, there will be hell to pay.

Back with the hybrid and the Rippah, or should I say hybrids? Plural, because Ray (David Gallagher) just completed his transformation, and Klaus doesn’t plan to stop at one. Like I said, this cannot be good. In fact, anything to do with Klaus cannot be good!

Down at the bottom of the Smoky Mountains, Elena and Alaric are being adorable.

Elena: “You were a boy scout, weren’t you?”
Alaric: “Shut up.”
Elena: “A boy scout slash vampire slayer.”
Alaric: “Slash whiskey-drinking all-around lost cause.”

What I really love about Alaric and Elena is how close they are. It’s obvious that Alaric is the closest thing Elena has to a father at this point. It’s official, Alaric lives forever, because Elena cannot lose anyone else! Since Alaric and Elena care so much about each other, this leads Elena to give Alaric his ring (It’s about time!), and Alaric returns the favor by inviting Damon to the party.

Somehow, Elena convinces Damon to stay, but on one condition.
“We are out of here before the moon’s full and I’m werewolf bait. Unless you want to relive that whole deathbed-kissy thing.” -Damon

Speaking of deathbed-kissy things, Ray’s rabid. Shocker. Bad part is, he bit Stefan. I’m pretty sure that a hybrid bite is way worse than a regular werewolf bite. Luckily, Stefan has Klaus to help him… Only Klaus won’t. Maybe Stefan and Klaus can have there very own deathbed-kissy thing? No?

Back in Mystic Falls with the evil Mayor Lockwood, a serious family meeting is held.
Tyler: “Let’s skip the part where we pretend we don’t know about the vampires in this town. You were testing me to see if I was a vampire. I want to know why.”

Carol: “You’ve been spending so much time with Caroline, I had to know for sure.”
Tyler: “What does Caroline have to do with it?”
Carol: “Let’s skip the part where we pretend she’s not one of them.”

This results in Carol saying that she won’t allow Tyler to be with her, because she’s a monster.

“You don’t know about me, do you?” -Tyler

This is a pretty hardcore family meeting.

Back in the Smoky Mountains, Damon, Alaric, and Elena have an unpleasent encounter with Ray. At first they believe Ray is a vampire, but soon come to realize that he’s a hybrid. Time to pull out the wolfsbane and vervain covered ropes! Seriously, poor Ray. He cannot catch a break!

Meanwhile, Klaus is trying to tame his ‘comrades.’ The only thing that confused me was the fact that Klaus gave Derek (Jason Mac) his blood, and a few hours later, killed him. Maybe all the blood left his system?

As Klaus is trying to tame his wild hybrids, Elena, Alaric, and Damon are trying to run for there lives. Key word, trying. Of course, Elena would trip and come face to face with a werewolf. I’m shaking my head in shame. Good thing Damon was there to lead it away. Though, it doesn’t work out too well when he runs into Ray. As Damon is seconds away from being bit, and possibly reliving the deathbed-kissy thing, Stefan saves the day!

“She’s not going to give up on you.” -Damon
“Well, she has too, because I’m never coming back.” -Stefan

It’s obvious that Stefan’s not gone. Stefan has gone full rippah a few times, the only difference is that this time he has Elena and Damon to save him. We all thought that Damon had completely given up on Stefan, but later in the episode he makes a confession to Elena.

Who else died at the end of that scene? Was I the only one?

This was my favorite scene during this week’s episode.

“They went rabid. Some of them I killed, the others just bled out. In the end, they’re all dead. I did everything I was told! I should be able to turn them, I broke the curse. I killed a werewolf, I killed a vampire, I killed the doppelgänger.” -Klaus

It’s obvious that Klaus is typically a spoiled child. He’s used to getting what he wants, but he’s more than that. He’s lonely. It may be hard to believe, but he’s the only one of his kind. He wanted a family, because he always felt separated from his real family. At least that’s how I interpreted it.

“It appears you’re the only comrade I have left.” -Klaus

I know you shouldn’t feel bad for Klaus, but look at that face!

To conclude this episode, three extremely shocking/amazing things happened. One, two ghosts and some beer. Matt and Jeremy not only saw Vicki (Kayla Ewell), but also Anna (Malese Jow). They each had something interesting to say.

“I can come back. Help me come back.” -Vicki

“Jeremy, don’t trust Vicki.” -Anna

I’d definitely listen to Anna. She always had Jeremy’s best interest at heart, but Vicki was always selfish. I’m really looking forward to seeing how this plays out!

Two, a shirtless Tyler. He finally revealed what he was to his mom, and she accepted him. I really loved the mother/son moment. I’m hoping for more of those.

Lastly, Caroline! Throughout this whole episode, we’ve been wondering what happened to her. It was the major cliffhanger to last week’s episode. It is revealed that she’s not doing so well. She’s chained to a chair, and when she called out for help, an interesting person answered. Bill, but that’s not the interesting part. It’s the fact that Bill is not just some random vampire hating citizen. He’s Caroline’s father. Cue the dramatic music.

I LOVED this episode! The only thing I didn’t love was the fact that it didn’t have Bonnie (Kat Graham) in it. Other than that, perfect. I’m really looking forward to next week, it has already been marked by Paul Wesley and Joseph Morgan as there favorite episode this season. Can’t wait!
