‘Once Upon A Time’ Review: That Still Small Voice

Just when we think Once Upon A Time couldn’t get any more epic, it proves us extremely wrong. During last night’s episode, we find out the back story of Jiminy Cricket and how he came to be.

The Fairytale World:

“Well, maybe I want to be something else. Maybe I don’t want to steal. Maybe I want to be good.” -Jiminy

The episode starts off with a young Jiminy (Adam Young). He is a pick-pocket who feels obligated to obey his scheming parents, but he has a desire to do good. As he grows into the older, more modern version of Jiminy AKA Archie (Raphael Sbarge) he is still following and obeying his parents. Even though his parents are horrible people, the fact that he’s stuck by them for this amount of time is truly astounding. It really shows how great of person he is, no matter what he’s done in his past. Though, everyone has a breaking point. Cue Rumpelstiltskin (Robert Carlyle).

“It’s my parents.” -Jiminy
“Then I have exactly what you need. This will set you free. Pour it, sprinkle it, put it in their curds and way… Anything will work.” -Rumpelstiltskin

You would think that word would spread to not make any deals with Mr. Rumpel, but no, people still do.

The next time we see Jiminy, he’s still with his parents. From the looks of it, it seems as though he’s not going to use the potion, but after they scam a kind couple into giving them their valuables for ‘elf tonic,’ he feels he has no choice. As he throws the potion on them… Nothing happens.

“You switched them?” -Jiminy
“Oh my, we must have given what ever you had to that family.” -Jiminy’s Father

As Jiminy runs back into the couple’s home, it is revealed that the potion ironically turned them into puppets. What made Jiminy feel even worse is the fact that a boy whom was kind to him awhile back was the son of the couple.

As Jiminy wishes upon a star, a small fairy appears! Luckily, Rumpelstiltskin didn’t blow up this one. He wishes for her to bring back the boy’s parents, but she says it’s not possible.

“It’s my fault. I have to make it right. I would trade my life to make it happen.” -Jiminy
“What’s done is done. There may be another way.” -Fairy
“Tell me, please.” -Jiminy
“The little boy, he will grow up to face many challenges. Do you want to help him?” -Fairy
“I can’t get away from these people. They’re my parents. They’re who I am.” -Jiminy
“But if you didn’t want to be that, what would you like to be?” -Fairy

And as he listened to the crickets… Ta da! The famous Jiminy Cricket, the conscience that we all love, came to be. Is it just me, or was anyone else tearing up a bit?

Storybrooke:

“You take that delusion out of my son’s head, and you crush it.” -Regina (Lana Parrilla)

After the mining center collapsed, and Regina makes it clear she wants it paved, Henry (Jared Gilmore) automatically assumes she’s hiding something. Seeing as Henry thinks Regina is the evil queen (Because saying things like the quote above is totally not evil queen behavior), she wants Archie, Henry’s therapist, to stop his suspicions.

This doesn’t blow over too well. The way Archie went about it, left Henry wanting to prove to him that he was telling the truth. So off to the very dangerous mining center he went. In the midst of trying to save Henry, Archie gets stuck in the mining center as well, leaving Regina and Emma (Jennifer Morrison) to work together to save their son.

Once they realize that Henry and Archie are stuck in an old elevator shaft, they send Emma down to retrieve them. She grabs Henry, and right when she tries to grab Archie, the elevator falls and crashes. Just when we think he’s dead, it shows that he grabbed onto Emma’s harness with his umbrella handle! Perfect.

Once again, another happy ending in Storybrooke! Everyone made it out okay, and all was well, but Archie did have something to say to Regina.

“Someday, Madame Mayor, you may find yourself in a custody battle. And you know how the court determines who is a fit parent? They consult an expert. Particularly one who has treated the child. So I suggest you think about that, and you allow me to do my work… And let me do it the way my conscience tells me to.” -Archie

Oh, snap!

I love how Once Upon A Time gives new perspective to every new story they tell. It ties in perfectly, and the stories that we all know so well, still end up surprising us. Once Upon A Time is definitely, in my opinion, the best new show. I can’t get enough!

  1. another great episode. although in the fairytail world i found it odd that jiminy’s wish was to actually be a grasshopper. kinda a weird wish..lol

i wonder how gold was able to hold on to the puppets in the real world?

  2. I still think that Mr. Gold has a lot bigger role in all of this than most people think. My theory is it’s an even bigger role than Regina’s… I’m so addicted to this show. haha 🙂

  3. I just hope we don’t have to wait 6 seasons for some details about what’s going on with him. With the Lost writers you can never tell. haha 🙂

  4. Vamplover–you asked how gold has the puppets. It makes sense that if the puppets still have would they would be transported to the modern world. Since Rumplestiltskin wanted comforts in the modern world, it doesn’t seem strange to me that he would retain anything he acquired in the old world. maybe Wmma will break their curse as well.
