‘Once Upon A Time’ Review: Pilot
No more happy endings? I disagree, because Once Upon A Time is the key to happiness. No exaggeration. It’s the dawn of the fairytale era on TV, and it’s taking over. From the moment I saw the previews for this show, I knew it would be a hit. I, being a huge fan of the supernatural genre, had to check it out.
The previews for this show started appearing months ago, and it definitely caught some interest. The series revolves around a town known as Storybrooke. It may look like a regular, boring town, but in reality it’s an enchanted forest where its magic has been forgotten. The town’s only chance for a happy ending is for their savior, Emma Swan, to find her way back.
First of all, Lana Parrilla’s performance as the Evil Queen was flawless. She managed to distinguish her fairytale character, from her evil foster mother character perfectly. It was spine-tingling.
“My gift to you is this happy, happy day, but tomorrow my real work begins. You’ve made your vows, now I make mine. Soon, everything you love, everything all of you love, will be taken from you forever. And out of your suffering will rise my victory. I shall destroy your happiness. If it is the last thing I do.” -Evil Queen
Chills.
Next, I would just like to make a quick statement. Jared Gilmore, who plays the adorable Henry, is possibly the cutest thing I’ve seen on TV for awhile. Henry is Emma Swan’s (Jennifer Morrison) son, whom she gave up at birth. (To the evil Queen. Nice one, Swan.) He is the reason why she returns to Storybrooke. Let me just say, if I ever have a son, I want him to be like Henry.
Also, Ginnifer Goodwin is gorgeous. She is the perfect Snow White, and I think she is simply amazing.
Last, but certainly not least, Robert Carlyle. Wow. He only had a few lines in this episode, and he gave me chills. His portrayal as Rumpelstiltskin was what brought this show up and over. Not only that, but even his portrayal as his alternate personality, Mr. Gold, was frightening. I am extremely impressed.
Once Upon A Time had a lot of hype. There were extremely high expectations for it, and it definitely delivered. This series is a dark, twisted, and magical story. I, for one, cannot wait to see where this story takes us.

i agree about Robert Carlyle characters he portrayed on the show. he was awesome. i enjoyed the show, i found a was slightly confused at times but i was still pretty engrossed with the show. looking forward to next weeks episode
I agree that Ginnifer Goodwin is perfectly cast and Jared Gilmore is a stellar child actor. However, overall, the show is a little bit dull so far (especially the real world elements). Most disturbing is that there is not one character of color in any sort of key role. As a work of pure fiction/fantasy, ABC had the opportunity to create a very diverse world, with characters that are of all colors and races, disabled, cross-gendered, etc. Unbelievable that they squandered this.
I personally loved it. I was a huge fan of Wonderful World Of Disney back in the day – and with this being in the same time slot – it’s very reminiscent for me. I think Carlyle is going to be one of the most interesting characters. I definitely think he has more involvement with the Evil Queen than we’re currently aware of. He clearly knew what was going on at the end of the episode. And Lliana – you bring up an interesting point. Though I don’t think we’ve met all the key characters yet – maybe they’ll surprise us.
I agree with Emma, we’re only one episode into the season. I’m sure they’ll bring in a few different characters.
I’m obsessed with this show, and I’ve only seen one episode. Really looking forward to what’s to come.
