Early Life

Hugh Michael Jackman was born on October 12, 1968, in Sydney, New South Wales. His parents, Grace McNeil and Christopher John Jackman, were both UK citizens who immigrated to Australia in 1967. As such, Jackman holds both British and Australian citizenship.

When Jackman was eight, his parents divorced. His mother returned to England with Jackman’s two older sisters. And Jackman and his two brothers stayed in Australia with their father. His mother later  remarried, giving Jackman a younger half-sister.

Jackman attended Pymble Public School as a child, moving on to Knox Grammar School in the Upper North Shore in Sydney. Before graduating, he starred in the school production of My Fair Lady. Jackman attended the University of Technology in Sydney, where he earned a degree in Communications in 1991.

During his last year at university, Jackman enrolled in a drama course to complete his credits requirements. Following graduation, he pursued acting further and signed up for The Journey, a one-year course offered by the Actors’ Center. After completing the course, Jackman then attended the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.

Jackman’s first acting job came shortly after his graduation in 1995. It was for Correlli, an Australian drama series. Unfortunately, the show only lasted one season. But it was where he met his future wife, Deborra-Lee Furness.

Jackman’s subsequent roles were for stage musicals in Melbourne, like Beauty and the Beast in 1995 and Sunset Boulevard in 1996. He also gained acclaim outside Australia when he starred in Oklahoma! in the 1998 Royal National Theatre West End production.

Shortly after this came his first film roles as Wace in Erskineville Kings and as Jack Willis in Paperback Hero, both in 1999.

Jackman skyrocketed to international superstardom when he was cast as Wolverine in the Marvel film X-Men in 2000. The superhero movie was a smash hit, earning almost $300 million at the global box office on a budget of $75 million. In addition, Jackman received a salary of $500,000 and was named Best Actor at the Saturn Awards.
