Her mother, Cynthia, is an editor, video producer, and author, and her father, Michael, is a bookseller, publisher, and author. Ryder also has a younger brother named Urie, who was named after Yuri Gagarin, the Russian Cosmonaut who was the first man in space. 

Ryder became interested in acting at the age of 12, when she enrolled at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. Her family moved to California at the age of 10, and she took her first acting lessons there. A few years later, she sent in her first videotaped audition.

Acting Career

While her first videotape did not land her a role in the movie Desert Bloom, the casting director was impressed with her performance. It landed her a role in Lucas, a high school drama that was released in 1986. She played a minor role alongside Corey Haim and Charlie Sheen.
