‘Once Upon A Time’ Review: Red-Handed

What. Just. Happened?! This week’s Once Upon A Time featured twist after twist. It was truly an outstanding episode, and it managed to keep us on the edge of our seat! The search to find Kathryn (Anastasia Griffith) reaches new lengths, while a wolf in the fairytale world runs rampant. Who’s afraid of the big bad wolf? The better question would be, who’s afraid of Red Riding Hood!

The Fairytale World:

“I’m going with or without you. But you’re right. I can’t let her keep me trapped forever.” -Red Riding Hood (Meghan Ory)

Some places have rat problems, others have bug problems. This village? Well, it has a pesky wolf problem. It’s attacking, not only the village’s livestock, but also its people. What can you do, but hunt it down? Well, that’s the mindset that Red has. After meeting Snow AKA Mary, (Ginnifer Goodwin) (***Side note: Loved how they incorporated Snow’s counterpart name there!) they hatch up a plan to find the big bad wolf. It ultimately leads them to Red’s lover, Peter (Jesse Hutch) and it does not end well. After realizing that Red is gone, the badass Granny (Beverley Elliott) takes Snow out to find her. She reveals that Peter is not the wolf, but that it’s actually Red. It runs in the family, and the only way to control it is if Red wears her red hood. (Which she doesn’t.) They arrive too late. Peter is dead, and the hunt has begun. This prompts Snow and Red to leave together before the hunting party catches up to them.

Storybrooke:

“David, the finger print’s weren’t yours . . . They were Mary Margaret’s.” -Emma (Jennifer Morrison)

The search for Kathryn is still going strong. David (Josh Dallas) is still the prime suspect, but Emma’s not buying it, forcing her to look for more clues and other possible suspects. *Cough* REGINA *Cough* Meanwhile, Ruby, the Storybrooke counter-part to Red, quits her job. This action leads her to Emma, who offers her a job at the police station. What a great move that was! Giving Ruby that job gives us two huge clues into the Kathryn mystery.

1. She finds David, completely out of it, and he can’t remember anything. It turns out that this is a side effect from his coma-state prior to this whole mess. Ugh oh. Can’t be good for proving his innocence.

2. But wait! While Ruby is out searching along the bridge, she finds a buried box. What’s inside? A human heart. It definitely belongs to Regina (Lana Parrilla), but Emma doesn’t know that. It is revealed that there are finger prints inside the box. And they belong to Mary Margaret. Talk about an epic plot twist.

My guess is that somehow in the Fairytale world, the Evil Queen captured Snow’s heart, but Snow (Or someone in her good graces) got it back, and buried it. I can’t see Mary Margaret capable of murder. Another explanation was could be that in the fairytale world, Snow stole the heart from the Evil Queen. It could have very well belonged to someone she cared about, and who needed to be out of the Queen’s grasp. But I guess we’ll have to wait until next week!

Is it possible for me not to love any episode of OUAT? Jane Espenson, one of the writers on the spectacular series, can do no wrong. And Meghan Ory was amazing during this episode. I definitely loved it. I admit, it was kind of slow in the beginning, but it quickly sped up and reached a new level of awesome. I would give “Red-Handed” an A+, but it was lacking Robert Carlyle.

  1. Favorite moment HAS to be the snowy forest scenes with Red and Snow walking around in their capes. Spectacular!

The box could’ve been Snow’s gift to Regina, maybe as a wedding gift when she married Snow’s father? It could still have Snow’s fingerprints in it, and the heart could be the one Huntsman Graham cut from the deer. Mary Margaret would be freed if Emma learns it isn’t a human heart, OR maybe Mr. Gold will have some insight into how the box came to be where it did. He knows his Fairy Tale objects!
