8 New Movies Coming Out This Week: ‘Disenchanted,’ ‘She Said,’ and More!

Wondering what’s coming out this week in theaters and on streaming? There’s no shortage of content releasing. From a sequel to a Disney classic musical to a movie about a couple of reporters who inspired the Me Too movement. Not to mention, there are also a couple of possible Oscar contenders.

Amy Adams reprises the role of Giselle, the film that propelled her to stardom. Zoe Kazan and Carey Mulligan star as two reporters breaking the story that brought down a Hollywood legend. And Jason Momoa plays a character named Flip in a film about a young girl exploring a world in her dreams. 

Here is the full rundown of new movies coming out this week in theaters, as well as those releasing on the major streaming platforms.

New Movies Coming Out This Week: November 14, 2022 – November 20, 2022

Disenchanted

Disenchanted  (2022)

Rating: PG

Release Date: Premiering on Disney+ on Friday, November 18, 2022.

Summary:

In Disenchanted, it’s ten years after her happily ever after, and Giselle (Amy Adams) and her family have moved to the suburb of Monroeville. However, the community isn’t as ideal as it seems. And soon Giselle wishes that their lives were the perfect fairy tale. Be careful what you wish for.

What to Watch For:

Patrick Dempsey will make his singing debut in the film. He did sing a line or two in the original movie (during the ballroom scene), but this will be a full-out song.

Word on the Street:

The film has been in development since 2010.

My Take:

It’s hard to believe that it’s been since 2007 that we discovered Amy Adams in the original film.

She Said

She Said   (2022)

Rating: R

Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Friday, November 18, 2022.

Summary:

She Said is about two reporters at The New York Times, Megan Twohey (Carey Mulligan) and Jodi Kantor (Zoe Kazan), who break the story of Harvey Weinstein and his years of sexual assault in Hollywood.

What to Watch For:

The film was shot in the New York Times building and is the first movie ever to use the actual offices of the Times itself.

Word on the Street:

Brad Pitt is one of the film’s producers. Pitt was involved with Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie, both of whom have accused Harvey Weinstein of sexual harassment.

My Take:

I can’t wait to see this film that many critics feel will be getting a number of Oscar nominations.

Slumberland

Slumberland  (2022)

Rating: PG

Release Date: Premiering on Netflix on Friday, November 18, 2022.

Summary:

Slumberland is about a young girl named Nemo (Marlow Barkley) who misses her late dad. Nemo discovers in her dreams the land of Slumberland, and with the help of a magical man named Flip (Jason Momoa), Nemo hopes to see her father again.

What to Watch For:

The film is based on the work of one of the pioneers of early motion picture animation, Winsor McCay.

Word on the Street:

The film is directed by Francis Lawrence, known for the award-winning films Constantine (2005) and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013).

My Take:

I am a huge fan of Winsor McCay. So I can’t wait to see what this live-action film does with his stories of Nemo.

The Menu

The Menu   (2022)

Rating: R

Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Friday, November 18, 2022.

Summary:

In The Menu, an obsessed foodie (Nicholas Hoult) and his girlfriend (Anya Taylor-Joy) are a last-minute addition to a trip to a secluded island, where a world-famous chef (Ralph Fiennes) is to serve them the meal of a lifetime. Unfortunately, it just might be their last.

What to Watch For:

The cast includes John Leguizamo, Aimee Carrero, Judith Light, Hong Chau, Janet McTeer, and Paul Adelstein.

Word on the Street:

Emma Stone was initially attached to the film. However, she was replaced by Anya Taylor-Joy when Alexander Payne dropped out of directing the film, and Mark Mylod took the helm.

My Take:

The film was shot in Georgia, with the beach scenes filmed on Jekyll Island.

The People We Hate at the Wedding

The People We Hate at the Wedding   (2022)

Release Date: Premiering on Amazon Prime on Friday, November 18, 2022.

Summary:

In The People We Hate at the Wedding, everyone has gathered for Eloise’s (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) wedding in the English countryside. Unfortunately, that means Eloise’s family will be there, which means there will be trouble.

What to Watch For: The film is based on the best-selling book of the same name by Grant Ginder.

Word on the Street:

The cast includes Kristen Bell as the bride’s half-sister, Ben Platt as the brother, and Allison Janney as their mother.

My Take:

The film’s screenwriters, Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin and Wendy Molyneux are Emmy-winning writers of the TV series Bob’s Burgers.

Bad Axe

Bad Axe   (2022)

Rating: N/A

Release Date: In select theatres and On Demand on Friday, November 18, 2022.

Summary:

Bad Axe is a documentary about an Asian-American family smack-dab in the middle of Trump’s rural America as they fight to keep their restaurant in the face of a pandemic, Neo-Nazis, and generational scars for the “Killing Fields.’

What to Watch For: The film won two 2022 SXSW Film Festival awards, including the Documentary Feature Audience Award.

Word on the Street:

The director of the film David Siev, is known for his films Bad Trip (2021) and Year Zero (2018).

My Take:

My fellow film critics feel that this film is almost a sure thing to get an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary.

The Wonder

The Wonder   (2022)

Release Date: Premiering on Netflix on Wednesday, November 16, 2022.

Summary:

The Wonder is about Lib (Florence Pugh), a nurse brought to the countryside to watch over a young girl named Anna (Kila Lord Cassidy). Lib has been given strict instructions not to interfere with Anna’s life, only to observe because Anna hasn’t eaten anything in four months. Is this the work of God, the Devil, or a trick?

What to Watch For:

The film is from filmmaker Sebastian Lelio, known for his movies Gloria (2013) and A Fantastic Woman (2017).

Word on the Street:

The film is co-written by Alice Birch, who wrote Lady Macbeth, the 2016 film that starred Florence Pugh.

My Take:

The film is based on the book of the same name by Emma Donoghue, who also wrote both the book and the screenplay for Room.

The Inspection

The Inspection   (2022)

Rating: R

Release Date: In theatres on Friday, November 18, 2022.

Summary:

The Inspection is about Ellis (Jeremy Pope), a young man whose mother (Gabrielle Union) has rejected him, and his friends are all in jail or dead. Left with no other options, he decides to join the Marines. However, Ellis is harboring a secret; he is gay. Can Ellis find a home in the military that he has never had?

What to Watch For:

The film is based on true events.

Word on the Street:

The film has done exceptionally well on the film festival circuit, with Jeremy Pope winning the Virtuoso Award at the 2022 Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

My Take:

I love that writer/director Elegance Bratton has described his film as the ‘gay Black Rocky.’
