6 New Movies Coming Out This Week: ‘The Fabelmans,’ ‘Strange World,’ and More!

Wondering what new movies are coming out this week? We have a bunch of new films just in time for the long holiday weekend, including a drama about post-WWII, an animated movie from Disney, a romance with a twist, and an uplifting tale about a groundbreaking pilot.

Steven Spielberg gives us a movie based on his childhood and his fascination with filmmaking in The Fabelmans. We get to go on a new adventure in Disney’s Strange World. Luca Guadagniono’s Bones and All brings audiences an unexpected romance. And we also have a historical drama about a young man who broke barriers in the military with Devotion.

Summary: The Fabelmans is about growing up in post-World War II Arizona, where Sammy Fabelman (Gabriel LaBelle) begins making home movies and learns how the power of film can help us see the truth about each other and ourselves.

What to Watch For: The film is inspired by filmmaker Steven Spielberg’s childhood.

Word on the Street: The short films that Sammy makes are based on scenes from 8mm films that Spielberg created when he was a child.

My Take: I love the fact that the cameras that Sammy uses in the film had actual film inside the camera props to make them seem real to Gabriel LaBelle.

Strange World

Strange World   (2022)

Rating: PG

Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Wednesday, November 23, 2022

Summary: Strange World is about Searcher (Jake Gyllenhaal), the son of legendary explorer and all-around hero Jaeger Clade (Dennis Quaid). Ever since his dad died when he was young, Searcher has been trying to leave that life behind. However, the world needs saving, and now Searcher must lead his family of explorers on a mission to find a special, possibly scary creature and maybe, save the world.

What to Watch For: Besides Gyllenhaal and Quaid, the cast includes Jaboukie Young-White, Lucy Lui, and Alan Tudyk.

Word on the Street: The film is co-written by Qui Nguyen, who won a Daytime Emmy for his writing on the PBS series Peg+Cat.

My Take: What can be better than seeing a Disney animated film during the holidays?

Bones and All

Summary: In Bones and All, Maren (Taylor Russell) is a young woman abandoned by her father and is on the run. Maren meets Lee (Timothee Chalamet), and Maren finds out quickly that they share a deep, dark secret. A secret that Maren thought she was the only one to have.

What to Watch For: The film won two 2022 Venice Film Festival awards, including the Marcello Mastroianni Award for Best Young Actor or Actress for Taylor Russell.

Word on the Street: The film is based on the award-winning novel of the same name by Camille DeAngelis.

My Take: I loved director Luca Guadagniono’s Academy Award-nominated 2017 film Call Me by Your Name.

Devotion

Devotion   (2022)

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Wednesday, November 23, 2022

Summary: Devotion is about Jesse Brown (Jonathan Majors), who is doing something many people in the Navy thought impossible, becoming the first Black aviator to earn his wings through the Naval basic training program. Now he must team with his new wingman, Tom Hudner (Glen Powell), and fight a war in Korea that will test their skill and friendship.

What to Watch For: The film is based on a true story. Lt. Jesse L. Brown was such a decorated and skilled pilot that the Navy named a ship in his honor in 1973.

Word on the Street: This, of course, is the second film this year Glen Powell has portrayed a Naval fighter pilot. Powell played Jake “Hangman’ Seresin in Top Gun: Maverick.

My Take: I am hearing great things about this film from fellow critics, and it’s over 80% currently on Rottentomatoes.com.

Fantasy Football

Release Date: Premiering on Paramount+ on Friday, November 25, 2022

Summary: Fantasy Football is about Callie (Marsai Martin), a young high-school student who keeps having to move to a new city because her father, Bobby (Omari Hardwick), is a professional football player who keeps getting cut because he fumbles too much. Somehow, someway, Callie has become the owner of a magical Madden NFL game that makes her father a superstar not just in the game but also on the actual football field. Can Callie keep the magic going for Bobby and his new team to win a championship?

What to Watch For: The film was shot in Atlanta, Georgia, the home of the Atlanta Falcons, the team that Bobby plays for.

Word on the Street: NFL Hall of Fame player Tony Gonzalez (who played for the Atlanta Falcons during his career) plays the coach of Bobby in the film.

My Take: A favorite singer of mine, Kelly Rowland, plays Callie’s mom in the film.

Salvatore: Shoemaker of Dreams

Summary: Salvatore: Shoemaker of Dreams is a documentary that tells the remarkable story of Salvatore Ferragamo, who came to America as a teen and became the shoemaker to Hollywood. He then left the movies, went back to Italy, and founded the namesake luxury brand the world adores.

What to Watch For: Legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese is interviewed for the film about Salvatore’s career in Hollywood during the silent film years.

Word on the Street: The film is nominated for Best Biographical Documentary at the 2022 Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards.

My Take: I am a huge fan of silent films. So I can’t wait to see this little-known history of filmmaking in Hollywood.
