‘The Vampire Diaries’ 4.06 Review And Recap: We All Go A Little Mad Sometimes

Ahhh! What an insane/amazing/brilliant/spectacular episode of Vampire Diaries! I cannot even contain my enthusiasm over “We All Go A Little Mad Sometimes,’ because it brought every single thing I loved about TVD back! Not only did it show Klaus’ (Joseph Morgan) sweet side, it also showed Elena (Nina Dobrev) facing her inner demons, and Stefan (Paul Welsey) finally showing himself the respect he deserves! And this may be a surprise to some people (not really), but I did tear up a bit!

The consequence for a vampire killing a member of the “brotherhood of the five” is to be haunted by said hunter until you die… Or until their legacy is fulfilled by another member. Elena is consumed with massive hallucinations varying from Connor (Todd Williams) attacking her and pressuring her to kill herself, to Katherine telling her that she’s a monster. Hell, even her mother told her that she should end her existence. Damon (Ian Somerhalder), Stefan, and Klaus had their own ideas on trying to help Elena. To be honest, when it comes to saving Elena, I would always listen to Klaus. When Klaus wants you alive, he has a pretty great way of keeping you alive. Sadly, Stefan and Damon took it among themselves to find their own way to help Elena. One being breaking her out of Klaus’ safe haven, and ultimately losing her.

Damon, on the other hand, thought it would be better to try to get Bonnie (Kat Graham) to lift the curse. After the past few episodes, it has become evident that Bonnie is pretty much useless at the moment, but we did get some insight from the very peculiar Professor Shane (David Alpay). He provided some helpful information that led to Damon, Klaus, Stefan, Jeremy, and partially Caroline to help set Elena free from her torment. Yet, in doing so, Caroline lost most of the trust Tyler (Michael Trevino) had in her. It seems that Caroline is being pushed towards Klaus, while Tyler towards Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin). I ship it.

The most interesting thing throughout this episode was perhaps the very little information we got on Professor Shane. We all know that he’s pretty much a wildcard. He has the trust of many people, yet he is definitely not to be trusted. Besides the fact that he was the one that sent Connor to Mystic Falls, he also had a lot to do with the explosion in episode 4.01… The one I’m still confused about. There are so many questions involving Professor Shane. How does he know so much? Why is he linked to the explosion? What’s his business with the brotherhood of the five and the tattoo situation? So. Many. Questions.

I just cannot get over this episode! Definitely, definitely my favorite of the season (so far). There is nothing I love more than character development. To be honest, we haven’t seen much in awhile on this show. Yet, in this episode alone, we saw Stefan grow by letting go of Elena for a bit, and we also saw Damon grow by trying to vouch for Stefan’s antics. The Salvatore’s have been slightly stuck in a loop for a long time. Fighting over a girl that leaves them the second they do something wrong. Instead of focusing on Elena so much, they’re starting to focus on themselves and each other. I love that. I also love that our little Jerbear is starting to grow some claws! He’s not the annoying little brother that we came to know and love in season one anymore. He’s now badass hunter on the rise! After an episode like this, I have no clue how I’m going to be able to wait until November 29th!

Questions:

  • What does this mean for Stefan/Elena/Damon?
  • Thoughts on Professor Shane and his involvement with literally everything?
  • Will Jeremy continue with his vampire hunting legacy?
