Rating: R

Release Date: Premiering on Netflix on Friday, December 30, 2022.

Summary: White Noise takes place in 1982, where Jack (Adam Driver) and Babette (Greta Gerwig) are the parents of a blended family, including anxiety-ridden Denise (Raffey Cassidy) and known-it-all Heinrich (Sam Nivola). Jack is a professor and one of the world’s experts on Hitler, but worries that people will judge him because he doesn’t speak German. Babette drops things at a moment’s notice to chase storms and seems to be forgetting a lot lately. Adding to the chaos is a major accident that will shake the very essence of their family foundation.

What to Watch For: The film is based on the 1985 novel White Noise by Don DeLillo. The book won the U.S. National Book Award for Fiction.

Word on the Street: Adam Driver is nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy.

My Take: Director/writer of the film Noah Baumbach has been nominated three times for his films Marriage Story (2019) and The Squid and the Whale (2005).

Turn Every Page: The Adventures of Robert Caro and Robert Gottlieb  (2022)

Rating: PG

Release Date: In select theatres on Friday, December 30, 2022.

Summary: Turn Every Page: The Adventures of Robert Caro and Robert Gottlieb is a documentary that follows the Pulitzer Prize-winning author Robert Caro and his relationship with his editor, the literary icon Robert Gottlieb, highlighting their 50-year professional relationship.

What to Watch For: The National Board of Review picked the film as one of the Top Five Documentaries of 2022.

Word on the Street: The film is directed by Lizzie Gottlieb, known for her documentaries Romeo, Romeo (2012) and Today’s Men (2006).

My Take: I loved Robert Caro’s book: The Years of Lyndon Johnson: The Path to Power.

Broker  (2022)

Release Date: In select theatres on Wednesday, December 28, 2022.

Summary: In Broker, a young woman, So-young (Ji-eun Lee), leaves a baby at an adoption drop-off. Her baby is then taken by a team of brokers (Song Kang-ho, Dong-won Gang) who steal infants left off for adoption and then sell the babies to parents wanting children, who the official process has denied. Little do the baby snatchers know that they are being watched by a couple of detectives trying to bring the snatchers to justice.

What to Watch For: The film won two awards at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival.

Word on the Street: The film is from award-winning director Hirokazu Koreeda, whose film Shoplifters (2018) was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Foreign Language Film.

My Take: I loved Shoplifters so I won’t miss this film.
