‘Once Upon A Time’ Season Finale Recap and Review: And Straight on Till Morning

It’s been a very interesting season for Once Upon A Time. Every character has had their fair share of ups and downs. Belle losing her memory, Henry meeting his real father, Gold almost dying, Regina losing her mother, etc. There has also been various introductions to new characters. Hook, Neal (Kind of), Mulan… This season has been the definition of a rollercoaster ride, and it has all led to this epic finale.

It’s time to save Storybrooke! After Tamara (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Greg (Ethan Embry) activate the self-destruct diamond for Storybrooke, Snow (Ginnifer Goodwin), Emma (Jennifer Morrison), Charming (Josh Dallas), Henry (Jared Gilmore), and Regina (Lana Parrilla) try to figure out a way to stop it. They make it clear that if Tamara and Greg do succeed in their plan, everything magical in Storybrooke will die. That includes Emma, but does not include Henry! Now, with even higher stakes, Regina takes it upon herself to slow down the diamonds magic destroying process… Revealing to Emma that by doing this, it will kill her. While Regina is slowing down the diamond, Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) and Charming try to find a few magic beans to make a portal for everyone to go through, resulting in a fight between Greg and Tamara. In the end, they all escape with one bean, and in one piece! Sadly, one bean may not be enough, especially with differing views. Once Emma reveals that Regina will die, the town decides to use the bean to try to force the diamond elsewhere. It’s a risky plan, but most everyone agrees to it… Most. Emma and Hook are extremely hesitant. Emma eventually agrees, but it’s Hook who has the bean. Hook seemingly hands over the bean to Emma, but it turns out that he took it for himself! All hope seems to be lost, but it turns out that, although Regina alone isn’t strong enough to stop the diamond- with the help of Emma- it might be possible! By combining their magic, Regina and Emma create a surge of power that stops Storybrooke’s destruction! Good DOES conquer all.

Sadly, by the end of the episode, somehow Tamara and Greg managed to kidnap Henry and take him to Neverland! Plot-twist! But after Hook redeems himself, he uses his ship to take Emma, Regina, Snow, Charming, and Gold on a quest to find Henry. No guarantee that they’ll ever return. Regardless, the gang has set sail for Neverland! Leaving Belle (Emilie de Ravin), with her memory back in tact, to protect Storybrooke. Next season is pretty much set!

What exactly happened after Hook found Baelfire (Dylan Schmid)? Well, it turns out that he took him under his wing! Hook quickly found out who Bae was, and thought that kindness might be the best way to get the information he needed out of the boy. After the Lost Boys (Peter Pan’s henchmen) arrive on Hook’s ship to search for Bae, Hook makes it his duty to protect him. Lying, he tells the Lost Boys that he only keeps men on his ship, and that he hasn’t seen a boy floating about in the water. This prompts one of the boys, Felix (Parker Croft), to make it clear to Hook exactly what Peter Pan does to liars. He rips their shadows right from them. Interesting twist! After not finding Bae, the Lost Boys leave, and so begins the friendship (or father-son like relationship) of Hook and Bae. I’m unsure how much time goes on, but Bae, after being taught all the ropes of the ship, finds a picture of his mother in Hook’s belongings. Upset, Bae tries to kill Hook, seeing as Rumpelstiltskin has told false stories of the evil pirate that captured and killed Bae’s mother. Finally, Hook reveals the true story of how he ran away with Bae’s mother, hoping to come back for Bae when he reached a proper age, and how Rumpel ripped her heart out right before his eyes. This is too much for Bae to handle, and he demands off the ship. Hurt, Hook does what Hook does best. Look out for himself. Instead of letting Bae go his own way, Hook hands him over to Peter Pan and the Lost Boys… But it’s evident how much Hook truly cared for Bae. Their relationship is very interesting and perplex! I really enjoyed seeing how they came to meet, after having various hints toward their rocky relationship. Surprisingly, that wasn’t all! The Lost Boys had earlier expressed that Peter Pan had an interest in Bae, but it turns out that they were specifically looking for someone… Not Bae, but Bae’s son! Ironically enough, the magic hating duo, Tamara and Greg, are working for Peter Pan. Yet, the question churning in everyone’s mind is… What do they want with Henry?

I’ll admit, I cried… A few times. Something about this episode stood out a bit more. I felt like the actors stepped it up a few notches. Honestly, this might just be my favorite episode of the season. I kind of liked the cliche bit where everything worked out, even if it only lasted for a few seconds. It definitely did not lack major plot twists. I found my jaw dropped multiple times during ‘And Straight on Till Morning’! Tamara and Greg taking Henry was a massive shock, and it left me, still confused. So many questions follow this finale. I definitely cannot wait until next season!
