9 New Movies Coming Out This Week: ‘Shotgun Wedding’ and More!

Nine new films are coming out this week! There’s a little something for everyone with a couple of rom-coms, horror films, and some stellar dramas.

So what all do movie fans have to look forward to? Jennifer Lopez’s wedding is interrupted by pirates in Shotgun Wedding. Next, Jonah Hill has to impress his girlfriend’s father in Netflix’s You People. Then, your favorite young werewolf is back in Teen Wolf: The Movie. And that’s just a handful of the new titles!

Here is the full rundown of new movies coming out this week in theatres, as well as those releasing on the major streaming platforms.

New Movies Coming Out This Week: January 23, 2023 – January 29, 2023

Shotgun Wedding

Shotgun Wedding  (2022)

Rating: R

Release Date: Premiering on Amazon Prime on Friday, January 27, 2023.

Summary: In Shotgun Wedding, Darcy (Jennifer Lopez) and Tom (Josh Duhamel) have invited their friends and family to the Philippines for their extravagant destination wedding. Unfortunately, someone else has invited themselves to the wedding, a group of pirates intent on a big payday. Darcy and Tom must save their friends and families. Maybe, also save their relationship in the process.

What to Watch For: An all-star cast is part of this film, including Jennifer Coolidge, Lenny Kravitz, Sonia Braga, Cheech Marin, D’Arcy Carden, and Callie Hernandez.

Word on the Street: One of the film’s producers is also the film’s star, Jennifer Lopez.

My Take: The trailer is wild, and I love the cast, so I won’t miss this film.

You People

You People  (2023)

Rating: R

Release Date: Premiering on Netflix on Friday, January 27, 2023.

Summary: You People is about Ezra (Jonah Hill), a podcaster who thinks he has a knack for understanding the culture in America. He meets and falls in love with Amira (Lauren London). That was the easy part. Now they must meet each other parents, and it will not be pretty because both sets of parents feel the couple are wrong for each other.

What to Watch For: Julia Louis-Dreyfus and David Duchovny play Jonah Hill’s parents, and Eddie Murphy and Nia Long play Lauren London’s parents.

Word on the Street: The film is written by Jonah Hill and Kenya Barris. Barris, who directs the film, is the creator of the TV comedy gems Black-ish and Grown-ish.

My Take: I am always happy to see Eddie Murphy in a comedy.

Teen Wolf: The Movie

Teen Wolf: The Movie   (2023)

Rating: TV-MA

Release Date: Premiering on Paramount+ on Thursday, January 26, 2023.

Summary: In Teen Wolf: The Movie a terrifying new evil has emerged, and only a werewolf like Scott McCall can gather the pack back to fight against what could be their most powerful and deadliest enemy, someone from their past that they thought was dead.

What to Watch For: This is a continuation of the long-running TV series, with much of the original cast returning.

Word on the Street: While Dylan O’Brien did not reprise his role of Stiles Stilinski for the film, Tyler Posey, Tyler Hoechlin, Crystal Reed, Shelley Hennig, and Colton Haynes are back.

My Take: I loved the series, and I am thrilled that we get more of the pack!

Infinity Pool

Infinity Pool  (2023)

Release Date: In theatres on Friday, January 27, 2023.

Summary: Infinity Pool is about James (Alexander Skarsgård) and Em (Cleopatra Coleman), who are a married couple enjoying an all-inclusive beach vacation on an island when they are involved in a fatal accident. Now they are about to learn that any crime committed on the island has serious consequences, consequences that could be horrific.

What to Watch For: The film is from the award-winning filmmaker Brandon Cronenberg, known for his music videos and his feature films Antiviral (2012) and Possessor (2020).

Word on the Street: Mia Goth, hot off her roles in last year’s horror film double feature, X and Pearl, plays a mysterious inhabitant of the island that might be the key for James and Em’s escape.

My Take: I have been a fan of Alexander Skarsgård since his role as Eric Northman, the vampire, on the great TV series True Blood.

Maybe I Do

Maybe I Do  (2023)

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: In theatres on Friday, January 27, 2023.

Summary: Maybe I Do is about Michelle (Emma Roberts) and Allen (Luke Bracey), who have been dating for a while, and they decide it’s time to determine if they should get married or break up. They invite their parents to meet and help them figure out their relationship. It turns out the parents know each other well, in fact, too well.

What to Watch For: Diane Keaton and Richard Gere, who play Michelle’s (Emma Roberts) parents in the film, worked together in one of Richard Gere’s first feature films, Looking for Mr. Goodbar (1977).

My Take: Hey, who isn’t up for a good rom-com?

Summary: Close is about two thirteen-year-old boys, Leo and Remi, who are best of friends, spending all their time together, but then the friendship suddenly gets disrupted, and Leo goes searching for answers.

What to Watch For: The film was up for three awards at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival and won the Grand Prize of the Festival Award.

Word on the Street: The movie is from filmmaker Lukas Dhont, whose previous film Girl (2018) also was a big award winner on the film festival circuit.

My Take: I have heard from fellow film critics that this is a must-see.

Fear

Fear  (2023)

Summary: Fear takes place when a group of friends gather for a much-needed getaway for a celebration weekend, but then that gathering turns into a nightmare when each is confronted by their worst fears, fears that will turn deadly.

What to Watch For: Director of the movie, Deon Taylor, is known for his films Supremacy (2014), Meet the Blacks (2016), The Intruder (2019), and Fatale (2020).

Word on the Street: The cast includes Joseph Sikora, Ruby Modine, Iddo Goldberg, Andrew Bachelor, Annie Ilonzeh, and TI.

My Take: We all know that I am always ready for a new horror film.

Life Upside Down

Life Upside-Down  (2023)

Summary: In Life Upside-Down, Jonathan (Bob Odenkirk), Clarissa (Radha Mitchell), and Paul (Danny Huston) are stuck at home during the start of the pandemic. They will see their lives turned upside down, forced to reevaluate their lives, relationships, and what they want from life.

What to Watch For: Bob Odenkirk is hot off his role as Jimmy/Saul in the Drama Series Better Call Saul.

Word on the Street: Filmmaker Cecilia Miniucchi is best known for her music videos starring the late singer Selena.

My Take: Radha Mitchell is an Australian actress I discovered in the fantastic comedy Love and Other Catastrophes (1996).

Cairo Conspiracy

Cairo Conspiracy  (2022)

Rating: N/A

Release Date: In select theatres on Friday, January 27, 2023.

Summary: Cairo Conspiracy is about Adam (Tawfeek Barhom, the son of a fisherman who has made his family proud by getting into the Al-Azhar University in Cairo, the center of power of Sunni Islam. Adam is soon asked to do something that will make him a pawn in the dangerous conflict between Egypt’s religious and political elites.

What to Watch For: The film has been an enormous hit on the film festival circuit, including winning Best Screenplay at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival.

Word on the Street: The film’s script was influenced by filmmaker Tarik Saleh’s grandfather, who came from a poor village to attend the same university that the film’s main character goes to.

My Take: I am fascinated and impressed by Tarik Saleh’s career and filmmaking skills.
