Curious about the new movies coming out this week? We have ten new films releasing this week! There are a couple of horror films, a comedy taking place at the Super Bowl, and a documentary about a pop icon.

M. Night Shyamalan brings us his next horror flick. There is a comedy produced by football GOAT Tom Brady. There’s a true story of a teen sailing the world alone. And Pamela Anderson gives us an insider’s look at what really happened in her life.

Here is the full rundown of new movies coming out this week in theatres, as well as those releasing on the major streaming platforms.

New Movies Coming Out This Week: January 30, 2023 – February 5, 2023

Knock at the Cabin

Knock at the Cabin   (2023)

Rating: R

Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Friday, February 3, 2023.

Summary: In Knock at the Cabin, Andrew (Ben Aldridge) and Eric (Jonathan Groff), along with their adopted daughter, Wen (Kristen Cui), have rented a cabin in the woods for a little weekend getaway. Their vacation is interrupted by a man (Dave Bautista) who appears out of nowhere, along with three other people. Andrew, Eric, and their daughter are going to be confronted with a task that, if not completed, could end the world.

What to Watch For: The film is based on the award-winning 2018 novel The Cabin at the End of the World by Paul G. Tremblay.

Word on the Street: The film is from M. Night Shyamalan, the two-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker known for his 1999 hit The Sixth Sense.

My Take: It is not out of the question that if Dave Bautista keeps growing as an actor, they could nominate him for an Academy Award in the near future.

80 for Brady

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Friday, February 3, 2023.

Summary: 80 for Brady is about four friends (Rita Moreno, Sally Field, Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin) who make it their mission to go to the Super Bowl and root for their favorite player, Tom Brady, to victory. The only problem is, can they figure out a way to get tickets?

What to Watch For: The film is based on a true story.

Word on the Street: Between the four leading actors, they have twelve Oscar nominations and five wins. Only Lily Tomlin has not won an Academy Award.

My Take: The song Gonna Be You in the film is written by Diane Warren and performed by Dolly Parton, Belinda Carlisle, Cyndi Lauper, Gloria Estefan, and Debbie Harry.

True Spirit

True Spirit  (2023)

Rating: N/A

Release Date: Premiering on Netflix on Friday, February 3, 2023.

Summary: True Spirit is about Jessica Watson (Teagan Croft), who, against the odds and despite many doubters, sets out to be the youngest person ever to sail solo, non-stop around the world.

What to Watch For: The film was shot off the coast of Australia.

Word on the Street: The film is based on Jessica Watson’s book about her experience sailing solo for 210 days.

My Take: One of my favorite actors, Anna Paquin, plays Jessica’s mother in the film.

The Amazing Maurice

Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Friday, February 3, 2023.

Summary: In The Amazing Maurice, a talking tomcat named Maurice (voiced by Hugh Laurie) goes on an adventure with a kid who has a group of rats following him and a young woman who loves mysteries.

What to Watch For: The voice cast includes David Thewlis, Emilia Clarke, Himesh Patel, David Tennant, Hugh Bonneville, Gemma Arterton, and Joe Sugg.

Word on the Street: The film is based on the beloved 2001 novel, The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents by Terry Pratchett.

My Take: I love the movie’s tag-line: ‘See Him in Cinemas Soon (if he feels like it).’

Pamela, a Love Story

Release Date: Premiering on Netflix on Tuesday, January 31, 2023.

Summary: Pamela, a Love Story is a documentary that allows Baywatch star and pop culture icon Pamela Anderson to tell her story, letting us know what really happened, in her own words.

What to Watch For: The film contains never-before seen footage and personal journals from Anderson’s own collection.

Word on the Street: The film is directed by Ryan White, the award-winning filmmaker of Good Night Oppy (2022), Ask Dr. Ruth (2019), and Good Ol’Freda (2013).

One Fine Morning

One Fine Morning  (2022)

Release Date: In select theatres on Friday, February 3, 2023.

Summary: One Fine Morning tells the story of Sandra (Léa Seydoux), who must make the tough decision of moving her father, who is suffering from a neurodegenerative disease, from his home to a nursing home. Amid this horrible time in her life, she runs into a married friend (Melvil Poupaud) and begins a torrid affair.

What to Watch For: The film won the Label Europa Cinemas award at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival.

Word on the Street: The film is from director Mia Hansen-Love, known for her movies Things to Come (2016) and Father of My Children (2009).

My Take: Many of my fellow critics felt that Léa Seydoux’s performance in the film was worthy of an Academy Award nomination.

Ocean Boy

Ocean Boy  (2022)

Rating: N/A

Release Date: In select theatres and On Demand on Friday, February 3, 2023.

Summary: Ocean Boy takes place during the summer on the Australian coast when Bosch (Luke Hemsworth) goes on the run, wanted for dealing drugs with his surf gang. In tow is his son, Rockit (Rasmus King), who has no idea what his father has done and thinks he is on a magical vacation with his dad.

What to Watch for: The film was shot at the famous and iconic Byron Bay on the East coast of Australia.

Word on the Street: Luke is, of course, the older brother of Chris and Liam Hemsworth. Luke is hot off his portrayal of Ashely Stubbs in the HBO sci-fi series Westworld.

My Take: I am always ready to see a film shot in Australia, a country I want to visit someday.

Let it Be Morning

Let it Be Morning  (2021)

Rating: N/A

Release Date: In select theatres on Friday, February 3, 2023.

Summary: Let it Be Morning is about Sami (Alex Bakri), a Palestinian-born Israeli citizen whose brother’s wedding has forced him to return to the Arab village where he grew up and vowed never to return. After the wedding, the town is put under a military blockade from which Sami can’t escape from. As he is stuck behind the town’s walls, secrets come out, and Sami watches everything he holds dear fall apart.

What to Watch For: The film won the Jury Prize at the prestigious Atlanta Jewish Film Festival in 2022.

Word on the Street: In 2021, the film won seven awards from the Israeli Film Academy, Israel’s version of the Oscars.

My Take: I missed this film at the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival last year, so I will be sure to see it this weekend.

Baby Ruby

Baby Ruby  (2022)

Rating: N/A

Release Date: In select theatres on Friday, February 3, 2023.

Summary: In Baby Ruby, Jo (Noémie Merlant) is a popular blogger and influencer whose followers have grown because of her pregnancy. Jo is convinced that she will be the ultimate mother, along with the help of her partner Spencer (Kit Harington), but the birth of her child is difficult, and motherhood is more challenging than she thought it would be, especially because Jo thinks her baby hates her.

What to Watch For: The director of the film, Bess Wohl, is best known for her award-winning plays Small Mouth Sounds, Barcelona, and Continuity.

Word on the Street: Noémie Merlant, whose performance as Marianne in the 2019 film Portrait of a Lady on Fire, just appeared with Oscar-nominated Cate Blanchett in the film Tar.

My Take: I find it interesting that after his role as Jon Snow, Kit Harington has been in the film Eternals and on stage with the National Theatre performing Henry V.

The Last Deal  (2023)

Rating: R

Release Date: In select theatres on Friday, February 3, 2023.

Summary: The Last Deal is about Vince (Anthony Molinari), a black-market marijuana dealer who is about to lose his way to make a buck when cannabis goes legal. Vince is desperate to make one last score, so desperate that he borrows money to finance the deal with the wrong crowd.

What to Watch For: Anthony Molinari won the Jury Prize for Best Performance at the 2022 San Antonio Film Festival.

Word on the Street: Sala Baker, who plays a crime lord in this film, got his start in the role of Sauron in the Oscar-winning movie The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings (2001).

My Take: Besides an actor, Anthony Molinari is a featured stuntman with over 190 films and TV shows, including stunts for Matt Damon in Ford v Ferrari.
