Vin Diesel Signs On For ‘Riddick: Furya’
It’s been ten years since the last installment in the Riddick movie franchise. And while we’ve known that another film was coming since Diesel first confirmed the news in 2016, it’s been a minute since we’ve had an update on the next movie. Finally, however, there is good news to report – Vin Diesel is set to star in Riddick: Furya, and he’ll reunite with writer/director David Twohy for the project.
The Riddick Franchise
“Our legion fans have demanded it for years, and now we’re finally ready to honor their call-to-action with Riddick: Furya. My collaboration with Vin and One Race has spanned 20 fruitful years, as together we’ve created three movies, two video games, an anime production and motion comics for the internet. This new big-screen event will see a return to Riddick’s homeworld, where we finally get to explore Riddick’s genesis.” Twohy said in a recent statement.
Riddick: Furya will be the fourth installment in the franchise, following 2000’s Pitch Black, 2004’s The Chronicles of Riddick, and 2013’s Riddick.
Pitch Black was a surprising hit at the box office. On a $23 million budget, the film grossed over $53 million worldwide. The film was the first time that Diesel starred as Richard B. Riddick, and it paved the way for The Chronicles of Riddick.
Unfortunately, the sequel wasn’t a success. It barely broke even with a global gross of $115 against a budget of $105 million. However, the box office numbers weren’t discouraging for Diesel, who had a long-term plan for the character and the franchise.
In 2013, Diesel revisited the character again, starring alongside Karl Urban and Katee Sachoff in Riddick. With a budget of $38 million, the third film went on to gross more than $98 million worldwide.
Riddick: Furya Will See Riddick Return to His Homeworld
According to IMDB Pro, Diesel is also set to produce Riddick: Furya alongside Samantha Vincent. And we also have an official description now. The Hollywood Reporter notes that description as: “In ‘Riddick: Furya’, the protagonist finally returns to his homeworld, a place he barely remembers and one he fears might be left in ruins by the Necromongers. But there he finds other Furyans fighting for their existence against a new enemy. And some of these Furyans are more like Riddick than he could have ever imagined.”
The project is currently listed as being in pre-production. We’ll keep you posted as more details are announced!
