New Movies Out This Week: Scream VI

Wondering what the new movies coming out this week are? It’s a big week for the box office!

First up, we have the return of Ghostface. Then, there’s Woody Harrelson returning to the hardcourt to coach. Next, Adam Driver fights dinosaurs. And then, our favorite English detective breaks out of prison to catch a serial killer. All that and an Oscar-nominated film from Ireland!

We even have an animated film about a war between teddy bears and unicorns! Here is the full rundown of new movies coming out this week in theatres, as well as those releasing on the major streaming platforms.

New Movies Coming Out This Week: March 6, 2023 – March 12, 2023

Scream VI

Scream VI   (2023)

Rating: R

Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Friday, March 10, 2023.

Summary: Scream VI takes place after Ghostface has killed again in Woodsboro. The survivors have moved to New York City to start a new chapter in their lives. Unfortunately, Ghostface is going to be a part of that too.

What to Watch For: For the first time in the series, Neve Campbell will not be appearing in a Scream film after starring in the previous five entries.

Word on the Street: Hayden Panettiere returns as Kirby Reed. Scream VI is the first acting role for Panettiere in five years.

My Take: Jenna Ortega is on quite a roll with her Wednesday TV series and her roles in X (2022), Scream (2022), and The Fallout (2021).

Champions

Champions   (2023)

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Friday, March 10, 2023.

Summary: In Champions, the court orders a former minor-league basketball coach, Marcus (Woody Harrelson), to manage a team of players with intellectual disabilities. Marcus will soon learn that his players have more to teach him than he will ever teach them.

What to Watch For: The film’s director, Bobby Farrelly, is best known for his wild comedies with his brother Peter, including There’s Something About Mary (1998) and Shallow Hal (2001).

Word on the Street: This is a remake of the award-winning Spanish film Champions (2018).

My Take: I love that the first scene that they filmed was when Marcus meets the players, Woody and the rest of the cast improvised the scene.

Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Friday, March 10, 2023.

Summary:  65 is about an astronaut named Mills (Adam Driver), who is piloting a ship when it crashes on a mysterious planet. Along with the only other survivor of the crash, a young girl named Koa (Ariana Greenblatt), Mills must survive in a hostile world full of giant creatures.

What to Watch For: The film is directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, two of the writers of the Oscar-nominated 2018 film A Quiet Place.

Word on the Street: The film scenes were shot in the Kisatchie National Forest in Louisiana.

My Take: Adam Driver taking on dinosaurs? Count me in!

Luther: The Fallen Sun

Luther: The Fallen Sun   (2023)

Release Date: In select theatres and premiering on Netflix on Friday, March 10, 2023.

Summary: In Luther: The Fallen Sun, the brilliant but disgraced detective Joh Luther (Idris Elba) breaks out of prison to hunt down a sadistic serial killer who is terrorizing London and flaunting in Luther’s face. Can Luther find this killer before the police find him?

What to Watch For: The film continues the BBC TV series Luther that Elba first starred on in 2010.

Word on the Street: Andy Serkis plays the serial killer that Luther is trying to catch. Serkis is best known for his roles as Gollum in the Lord of the Rings films and Caesar in the Planet of the Apes films.

My Take: I am a big fan of the Luther TV series and can’t wait to see this film.

The Quiet Girl

The Quiet Girl   (2022)

Release Date: In select theatres on Friday, March 10, 2023.

Summary: The Quiet Girl is about Cáit (Catherine Clinch), a young girl who doesn’t seem to fit in anywhere, including with her wildly dysfunctional family. She is sent away to live with foster parents for the summer, and there she discovers a world that will open up for her. It’s a home where affection slowly grows, and there are meant to be no secrets, but Cáit will discover one.

What to Watch For: The film is nominated for this year’s Academy Awards for Best International Film.

Word on the Street: The film is the first Irish language film to be nominated for an Oscar.

My Take: Film critics are raving about this film, so I will be sure to see it.

Unicorn Wars

Unicorn Wars   (2022)

Release Date: In select theatres and On Demand on Friday, March 10, 2023.

Summary: In Unicorn Wars, the Teddy Bears have been at war with the Unicorns for years. Two brothers, the aggressive, confident teddy bear Bluet and his shy, withdrawn brother Tubby, are about to go to war, and their complicated and strained relationship could determine the fate of the entire war.

What to Watch For: The film has won many awards on the film festival circuit and was a big hit at Fantastic Fest.

Word on the Street: The film is from award-winning filmmaker and illustrator Alberto Vazquez, known for his film Birdboy: The Forgotten Children (2015).

My Take: The film has been described as Bambi meets Apocalypse Now.

I Got a Monster

I Got a Monster   (2023)

Rating: N/A

Release Date: In select theatres and On Demand on Friday, March 10, 2023.

Summary: I Got a Monster is a documentary on a police corruption scandal that shocked America. In March 2017, local hero and cage-fighting ‘super cop’ Wayne Jenkins was federally indicted on racketeering charges along with six other members of a Baltimore elite task force. Jenkins and his crew were terrorizing the city’s Black community while working with a coke-dealing bail bondsman to steal and redistribute drugs in the city.

What to Watch For: This is the first feature film from director Kevin Abrams, whose short film Left at the Rio Grande (2005) won the Award of Excellence at the 2007 Accolade Competition.

Word on the Street: Kevin Abrams created and directed the YouTube TV series Fight of the Living Dead.

My Take: I love a good documentary.

Chang Can Dunk

Chang Can Dunk   (2023)

Rating: PG

Release Date: Premiering on the Disney+ channel on Friday, March 10, 2023.

Summary: Chang Can Dunk is about a young Asian-American teen named Chang (Bloom Li) who loves basketball but isn’t good enough to make the team. When a school bully makes fun of Chang, and it goes viral, Chang bets the bully that by the end of the school year, he will dunk a basketball. Chang just wants to dunk a ball but ends up learning how to believe in himself.

What to Watch For: Jingyi Shao, the director of the film, won the Palm Springs International Film Festival Directors to Watch Award for the film.

Word on the Street: This is the first feature film for Bloom Li, who played Kerrigan on the TV series Pretty Dudes.

My Take: Dexter Darden plays a coach Chang hires to teach him how to dunk. Darden played the role of Frypan in The Maze Runner film series.

The Magic Flute

Summary: In The Magic Flute, 17-year-old Tim Walker (Jack Wolfe) travels from London to the Austrian Alps to attend the world-famous Mozart boarding school. There, he discovers a passageway into the fantastic world of Mozart’s ‘The Magic Flute,’ where imagination has no limits and a Queen of the Night reigns.

What to Watch For: Jack Wolfe is best known for his role as Wylan on the TV series Shadow and Bone.

Word on the Street: The school’s headmaster is played by F. Murray Abraham. Abraham won an Oscar for his portrayal of Antonio Salieri in the film Amadeus, which was about Mozart.

My Take: F. Murray Abraham is a favorite actor of mine and is currently on the red-hot TV series The White Lotus.
