Will There Be More ‘Scream’ Movies? Here’s What We Currently Know.
With the release of Scream 6 on Friday, fans are asking the inevitable question. Will there be more Scream movies?
If it’s up to Scream 6 directors Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, fans should be in luck as the duo have gone on recorded stating how they hope that more Scream movies get made.
Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin Want More Scream Movies
Gillett and Bettinelli-Olpin are explaining that they want the slasher franchise to continue for as long as possible – regardless of whether they are involved.
“We want it to continue forever. (Whether we’re) involved or not,” Gillett, 42, says in an interview with IndieWire. “We never would’ve imagined that we’d get to step into this franchise ever in our wildest dreams. So it if leaves our life and goes some other direction, as long as it sticks around, as long as they keep making them, that is the most important thing to us.”
Gillett and Bettinelli-Olpin took over directing duties on the franchise from the late Wes Craven, who died at age 76 in 2015. And they’ve both certainly felt the pressure of living up to the legendary filmmaker.
“I think we really felt the responsibility of what that meant to be stepping into Wes’ shoes, to be following up that legacy. And we didn’t want to f*** it up,” Bettinelli-Olpin, 45, said.
Additionally, Gillett explained how the pair were guided by Craven’s moviemaking approach in their early film projects.
“Our careers have always been some form of emulation, some form of trying to achieve that feeling that we first had when we watched that first ‘Scream’ movie,” Gillett revealed. “Wes has been spiritually a part of our careers since the beginning, as fans of his work.”
“But then getting to know him through stepping into this role and meeting the people that he worked with, hearing stories about him from the cast and the crew, it really feels like he’s been a part of our lives forever. And it’s been really cool to get to know him intimately, even though we never got to meet him.” he adds.
Opening Night Box Office Numbers for Scream 6
While no plans are in motion for Scream 7 yet, early box office numbers are promising for the horror flick. With a budget of $35 million, the film has already domestically grossed $19.3 million on opening night alone.
When Gillett and Bettinelli-Olpin were specifically asked about Scream 7, they also confirmed they had no additional intel at the moment.
“We don’t know about a ‘Scream 7’ yet. We’d of course love to see a million more Screams,” they responded.
“We don’t know what’s next, But we hope that the Scream franchise just lives on and on. Because it can, because it’s a franchise that reinvents itself every time anyways. So there’s something just built into it that allows it to just continue.” they added.
The Potential for a Spin-Off
Scream 7 aside, it’s also possible that there could be a Stab series in the future. For those not familiar with Stab, it’s the in-universe movie franchise that follows the “real” killings in the Scream movies. In fact, Scream 3 actually took place on the “set” of one of the Stab movies.
The potential for a spin-off is definitely something that interests both Gillett and Bettinelli-Olpin.
“We do always joke about a spin-off of the Stab series, that would be really fun for us. We would be, just call. And we’ll do it, it’d be so fun,” explains Bettinelli-Olpin.
