Adam Driver Loved Working on the Georgia-Filmed ‘Megalopolis’

Adam Driver has been spending some time in Georgia lately filming Francis Ford Coppola’s next flick, Megalopolis. And the star, who is currently appearing in 65, isn’t shy about how much he’s enjoyed working on the project.

Megalopolis follows the story of an architect who wants to rebuild New York City as a utopia following a devastating disaster. Driver, 39, is a part of the incredibly packed ensemble cast, which also includes Aubrey Plaza, Nathalie Emmanuel, Giancarlo Esposito, Shia LaBeouf, Dustin Hoffman, Forest Whitaker, Jon Voight, and Laurence Fishburne – just to name a few.

“‘Megalopolis’ is one of the most exciting things that I’ve been a part of, with Francis in particular,” Driver says in an interview with Paste. “It’s one of the best shooting experiences I’ve had. And the things he’s made, there’s no frame of reference for it. It’s so unique and inventive. And hopefully accessible by everyone. That it’s not so elusive that it’s for a certain audience, it’s for everyone.”

“And he is everything that you hope he will be,” Driver adds.

Megalopolis Is a Passion Project for Coppola

Megalopolis has been described as a passion project for Coppola, who started writing the script back in the 1980s. And aside from writing and directing the movie, he’s also self-financing the project.

“I know his movies so much more because it’s impossible not to watch them and see him in all of them. He’s so courageous,” Driver also notes. “He made it himself so he would have control over the thing it was. He kept pushing it to be as inventive as it could be.”

Previous media coverage of Megalopolis implied that Coppola had struggled to maintain control over the project after a high staff turnover and a budget that kept evolving. However, Coppola has stated that was anything but the case and that the filming had gone smoothly.

Previous reports suggested that Francis was struggling to keep control over the film amid a high staff turnover and an escalating budget but the legendary director insisted that the shoot had been smooth.

“I’ve never worked on a film where I was so happy with the cast,” Coppola, 83, says. “I am so happy with the look and that we are on schedule. These reports never say who these sources are. To them, I say, ha, ha, just wait and see. Because this is a beautiful film and primarily so because the cast is so great.”

While there’s no release date planned for the film, it’s expected to wrap filming soon in Georgia. And then premiere sometime in 2024, according to Deadline. We’ll keep you posted as more news on Megalopolis surfaces!
