Curious about what the new movies coming out this week are? There’s a slew of new films releasing, including the return of the kid who yells ‘Shazam’ to turn into a superhero.

Along with Zachary Levi wearing the superhero suit, we have Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin plotting revenge and Willem Dafoe as an unlucky cat burglar. Then there’s an animated film about a quest to find an elephant to reunite with a long-lost sister. Next, we have an award-winning film about a young woman trying to find her birth mother in Korea.

Plus, for true-crime fans, there is a film about the infamous Boston Strangler and the reporter who broke the story.

Here is the full rundown of new movies coming out this week in theatres, as well as those releasing on the major streaming platforms.

New Movies Coming Out This Week: March 12, 2023 – March 19, 2023

Shazam! Fury of the Gods

Shazam! Fury of the Gods  (2023)

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Friday, March 17, 2023.

Summary: Shazam! Fury of the Gods is about Billy Batson (Zachary Levi / Asher Angel) and his foster siblings, who transform into superheroes by saying “Shazam,” are still learning to control their powers. The gang will have to grow up quickly as they take on the Daughters of Atlas, who want to use a weapon that could destroy the world.

What to Watch For: Lucy Liu is Kalypso, and Helen Mirren is Hespera, the Daughters of Atlas.

Word on the Street: David F. Sandberg, who directed Shazam! (2019), returns to direct this sequel.

My Take: I was a big fan of Zachary Levi’s TV series Chuck.

Moving On

Moving On  (2022)

Rating: R

Release Date: In theatres nationwide on Friday, March 17, 2023.

Summary: In Moving On, Claire (Jane Fonda) and Evelyn (Lily Tomlin) reconnect at a funeral and decide to get revenge on the widower (Malcolm McDowell) who messed with them decades before. Now, how should they kill him?

What to Watch For: The film is from filmmaker Paul Weitz, who was nominated for an Academy Award for his screenplay About a Boy (2002).

Word on the Street: The film premiered at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival.

My Take: After the success at the box office of 80 for Brady (2023), it will be interesting to see how this film starring Fonda and Tomlin will do.

Inside

Inside  (2023)

Rating: R

Release Date: In select theatres on Friday, March 17, 2023.

Summary: Inside takes place when a high-end art thief (Willem Dafoe) breaks into an ultra-high security New York Penthouse to steal some paintings, but the heist doesn’t go off as planned, and now the thief is locked inside with no way out.

What to Watch For: The film was nominated for the Panorama Audience Award at the 2023 Berlin International Film Festival.

Word on the Street: This is the second film from writer/director Vasilis Katsoupis. Katsoupis’s first film was the 2016 film My Friend Larry Gus.

My Take: It is always interesting to see what Willem Dafoe can do with a role.

Return to Seoul

Return to Seoul  (2022)

Rating: R

Release Date: In select theatres on Friday, March 17, 2023.

Summary: Return to Seoul is about Freddie (Park Ji-min), a twenty-five-year-old French woman who returns to Korea, the country she was born in before being adopted by a French couple. It’s Freddie’s first time in Korea, and she decides to track down her biological parents. It’s a decision that will change Freddie’s life forever. For better or worse.

What to Watch For: The film was a hit on the film festival circuit, nominated for the Un Certain Regard Award at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival.

Word on the Street: The film was the official of Cambodia for the Best International Feature Film category of the 95th Academy Awards in 2023.

My Take: The film is rated on Rotten Tomatoes at an outstanding 98% by over 80 film critics.

The Magician's Elephant

The Magician’s Elephant  (2023)

Rating: PG

Release Date: Premiering on Netflix on Friday, March 17, 2023.

Summary: In The Magician’s Elephant, Peter (Noah Jupe) has been searching for his long-lost sister when he encounters a fortune teller who tells him to find a mysterious elephant and the magician who will conjure it. The prophecy sets Peter off on a journey where he will have to complete three seemingly impossible tasks. However, Peter is determined to complete the tasks and find his sister.

What to Watch For: The film is based on the book of the same name by Kate DiCamillo.

Word on the Street: The film’s voice cast includes Cree Summer, Miranda Richardson, Brian Tyree Henry, Mandy Patinkin, and Benedict Wong.

My Take: This is the directorial debut for Wendy Rogers, who was the Visual Effects Supervisor on Puss in Boots (2011), The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008), and Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron.

Boston Strangler

Boston Strangler  (2023)

Rating: R

Release Date: Premiering on Hulu on Friday, March 17, 2023.

Summary: Boston Strangler tells the story of Loretta McLaughlin (Keira Knightley), a reporter in a time when women only wrote about fashion and high society, who first connected the murders of women in the city of Boston with a serial killer known as The Boston Strangler.

What to Watch For: The cast includes Carrie Coon, who plays Jean Cole, a fellow reporter that helps Loretta break the story, Chris Cooper as the newspaper editor who takes a chance on Loretta, and Rory Cochrane as a detective in the Boston police force.

Word on the Street: The film is produced by Ridley Scott, the four-time Oscar nominee of The Martian (2015), Black Hawk Down (2001), Gladiator (2000), and Thelma and Louise (1991).

My Take: I am fascinated by the ‘Boston Strangler’ true-crime story, so I can’t miss this film.

Supercell

Supercell  (2023)

Release Date: In theatres and On Demand on Friday, March 17, 2023.

Summary: In Supercell, William Brody (Daniel Diemer) is the teenage son of legendary storm chaser Bill Brody, who died after getting caught in a super tornado. William discovers Bill’s journals and a mysterious device that could change our understanding of Supercell storms. William must convince his mother (Anne Heche) and his dad’s former partner (Skeet Ulrich) to let him test the device in a ‘Supercell.’

What to Watch For: This is one of the last films that Anne Heche made before her death last year.

Word on the Street: The film won the Jury Award for Best Cinematography at the 2022 Newport Beach Film Festival.

My Take: One of my favorite roles of Anne Heche was as Marin Frist in the 2006-2008 TV series Men in Trees.

Pinball: The Man Who Saved the Game

Pinball: The Man Who Saved the Game  (2022)

Rating: N/A

Release Date: In select theatres on Friday, March 17, 2023.

Summary: Pinball: The Man Who Saved the Game is the story of Roger Sharpe (Mike Faist), a junior reporter who loved to play pinball until he learned it has been banned in New York City for the past 35 years. Now Roger is on a mission to overturn the ban and bring back the game he loves.

What to Watch For: The film won two awards at the Heartland International Film Festival.

Word on the Street: The film is based on a true story. And Sharpe is considered one of the greatest pinball players in the world.

My Take: I love the trailer for this film.

Wildflower

Wildflower  (2022)

Summary: Wildflower is about Bea Johnson (Kiernan Shipka), a high-school student who studies hard, has good grades, a part-time job, and a potential boyfriend. Her future would be bright. But there is one problem. She is the daughter of two intellectually disabled parents (Samantha Hyde and Dash Mihok) who depend on her to run their lives.

What to Watch For: The film premiered at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival.

Word on the Street: Kiernan Shipka is best known for her roles as Sabrina Spellman in Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and as Sally Draper in the TV series Mad Men.

My Take: The film is based on writer/director Matt Smukler’s 2020 documentary film, also named Wildflower, which was about his niece.
