Andrew Garfield and Oscar Isaac In Talks for Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Frankenstein’

Andrew Garfield and Oscar Issac

Andrew Garfield and Oscar Isaac are in talks to join the cast of an upcoming Netflix project, Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein.

Insiders have said that del Toro is still working on the script and that no actors have received formal offers yet. However, del Toro is said to have met with both Garfield and Issac, along with actress Mia Goth as well.

What We Currently Know about Frankenstein

The live-action project has been something del Toro has been working on for a while. In fact, IMDB has the pitch for the initial project as 2008, only two years after the release of Pan’s Labyrinth.

Will the project be a period piece or a modern-day take on the classic Mary Shelley-penned story? It’s currently unknown, as the plot is being kept under wraps. It’s also unclear if Garfield or Isaac would be playing Doctor Frankenstein or his creation, though it is rumored that Mia Goth will be the doctor’s love interest.

According to IMDB Pro, the movie is currently in pre-production and will begin filming in June. Dan Lausten will be handling the cinematography. And Gary Ungar will be producing alongside del Toro.

Guillermo del Toro’s Previous Netflix Project

Guillermo del Toro brought home the Oscar earlier this week for the Best Animated Feature film category. His stop-motion animated adaptation of Pinocchio won more than 60 accolades during the award season. Del toro was hopeful that the support for the film would draw more support for the art form.

“Animation is ready to be taken to the next step,” he said. “Animation is cinema, animation is not a genre… Keep animation in the conversation.”

“This is an art form that has kept being kneecapped commercially and industrially and the kid’s table for so long,” he adds. “And it really is a mature, expressive, beautiful, complex, art form. So a win helps, but it is about going forward as a community.”
